Looking in the "Table of Hardware: Firmware downloads" the column containing the "Upgrade URL" is listed as "sysupgrade image" but the "Snapshot Upgrade URL" is listed as "Factory sysupgrade image"
I should use a Factory image when I install OpenWRT the first time.
But is "Factory image" and "Factory sysupgrade image" the same in this case?
I would expect that I should use the "sysupgrade" image because no real "factory" image seems to exist and just ignore "factory sysupgrade" images because they are untested snapshots?
I was hoping someone with experience with one of these would reply. I thought I would try finding info for you and I had some success.
Note that this device might not be supported after version 23.05 due to the limited ram and storage.
Please read the release notes for any other important info if you have not yet.
Your device is quite old and discussion of adding it to OpenWrt precedes the current forum start. A few years ago the forum site suffered a catastrophic failure but data recovery was attempted and an archive was setup at https://forum.archive.openwrt.org/
You can search it with google, duck duck go etc. https://duckduckgo.com/?va=p&t=hc&q=site%3Aforum.archive.openwrt.org+BR-6475nD&ia=web
If you get a 404 error when trying to open a topic on the archive site from the search page like: https://forum.archive.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=48072
Try replacing the "?" with "%3F" . https://forum.archive.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php%3Fid=48072
That forum topic may give you your answers but it might be good to look at others as well.
Lastly, it looks like the newest firmware from Edimax (from 2013) may be available from here if you want/need to go back to that while testing installation of OpenWrt:
'Factory' and 'sysupgrade' tend to be mutually exclusive. The former is used to flash OpenWrt from the OEM firmware. The latter to upgrade an existing OpenWrt installation.
Look for 22.03 images, 8/64 is sharp with 23.05 (already with 22.03, to be honest).
Yes, Factory and sysupgrade should be different but I ended up trying to load 23.05.0 sysupgrade. I concluded that, since "Factory sysupgrade" in the firmware list pointed at a snapshot version located in the same directory in the snapshot directory tree as the the 23.05 sysupgrade in the 23.05 directory tree they were most likely the same in terms of packaging.
I also chose the sysupgrade because the risk was higher with snapshot version. Later on I went and had a look at some of the latest commit comments for the code for the device where it looked like no special factory image is built.
Buttom line: Installing the sysupgrade was a success and now the router is running OpenWRT
I think this is true. The following is what I think is done.
For devices with embedded flash storage It looks like OpenWrt usually only uses the part of storage that the OEM used for the operating system and related files and leaves the partition table alone. Any partitions of the storage that contain things like the bootloader, radio calibration files and other proprietary essential data are left in place. What you see in the display is filesystem that OpenWrt has mounted.
