Existing LAN (only problem with reolink surveillance cam) and starlink (internet access) doesn't work with openwt (RE450)

I try to describe my problem. I wanted to write it about the reolink problem earlier but i thought it's not urgent so i will wait but now also starlink doesn't work.

it started long time ago, when i updated my RE450 to the latest official firmware from tp-link. the older firmware allowed me to connect wifi 2.4 with wifi A and wifi 5 with wifi B. i really enjoyed it switching between 2 different wifi-networks because one has a different purpose than the other. there were reasons not to combine them (the networks). one of the reasons why i had to separate networks were the devices responsible for the wifi-network like access points, router, repeater, etc. and another reason is the point where i get the internet access from. there are several ways of getting internet access from a modem like DSL (will be shutdown year 2035) from the floor, cable internet from the living room, fiber internet from the basement and since the installation of cables is not easy but costly, I try to build bridges with cheap repeaters wherever i find and/or get them. e. g. there was a deal of tp-link repeater (not RE450) for 10 € each and i bought 5 of them.

this introduction shows how complicated my networks are build in a house as huge as the one i am living in right now (and typing this text). i try to describe it as simple as possible.

reolink cams come with an app which allows the customer to see what is happening in front of the cam. you can also customize them, set up ftp (that's why i love reolink products and the NAS port of FRITZ router ( i really hope you know what a fritz router is ). i have connected the cheapest hard drive you can imagine at the USB port of the fritz router and record everything (SATA to USB adapter).

if i connect my smartphone to the wifi of the fritzbox 7490 and i open the app, i see the cams, they are online. if i connect to the wifi of a fritzbox 7430 (has some problems while working every few months but i am ok with it), i see the cams, they are online. the fritzbox 7430 is part of the mesh network. the 7490 is the mesh master and the 7430 is a mesh repeater. the front cam uses the wifi of the 7490 and the rear cam uses the wifi of the 7430. everything works fine for years.

i forgot to add that most of the networks were just experiments and tryouts. no serious stuff, i just wanted to test stuff like wifi, 2.4, 5 ghz, cable internet, fiber internet (contract already canceled, just needed the access in the basement), surveillance cam (you won't believe what you can see at night in front of my house). 4G LTE 5G 6G as a hotspot (smartphone) is enough for me. every experiment showed me all the benefits the technolgy has.

the RE450 had been updated to the latest factory firmware and lost the ability to contact two different wifi networks. in the beginning i can devide the 2.4 and 5 wifi again for wifi A and wifi B but after some hours either both wifi's (2.4 and 5) connect to wifi A or wifi B and i can't access the routers of each wifi (in the basement was another fritzbox 7490). because of that and since tp-link dropped support of RE450, i decided to give openwrt a try.

sorry but it was a hassle to set up the wifi repeater. my wish is that it connects with the 7430 router (2.4 ghz only) and between the 7490 and the RE450 there is one of these 10 € repeater from tp-link (had to check it's name) AC750, quite powerful. still original firmware on them. the AC750 is connected to the wifi of the fritzbox 7490 and if i connect with my smartphone its wifi, i can see the cams very well (i HAVE TO deactivate it's pre-enabled DHCP-server!!).

the fritzbox 7490 in the basement i have mentioned had been the router for the ONT (fiber modem) but since the contract has ended and i will probably never order fiber internet again (except it will be under 15 € per month, speed not relevant) only the 7490 in the living room is important (NAS, DHCP, ...). if fritzbox A connects to another fritzbox B, then fritzbox B who spreads the internal IP addresses will remain 192.168.178.1. that's why the fritzbox (fritzbox A) in the living room has now IP 192.168.188.1. i don't care about ip-adresses.

now i have set up starlink in the rear side of the house. i have tried to study and learn most of it before arrival. i don't know about the bypass mode, i want to keep the starlink router as it is (if someone doesn't know how starlink works, i can share photos of the setup. the starlink Standard 4X has not an included router, but the shippment will deliver one. the Mini-X will arrive later and it has an included router. i have set up starlink in the rear side of the house. the RE450 is also in the rear side of the house (the 7430 is in the floor, in the middle of the house). the RE450 is in the starlink app visible as OpenWrt, very good. i can see data transfer on the WebUI (LuCI). but i have no access to the internet.

on the other hand, IF i connect the 7490 from the living room with a LAN cable to a cable internet modem or with the 7490 in the basement with fiber internet*, then the internet works fine depending on the internet access technology and because of that, the cams are also visible in the reolink app, because(!) the data won't be transmitted LAN-only but through the WAN (internet) directed by the reolink servers. in this scenario i am able to see the cams in the reolink app while connected to the RE450. without internet, only the non-OpenWrt-devices work.

*the solution to fiber internet was like this: fiber internet modem in the basement was connected to a fritzbox 7490 with LAN right next to it. above the basement is the living room, somehow the 7490 in the living room can't connect to the 7490 in the basement so in the living room is the AC750 which helps with the wifi signal between both 7490's. i used the RE450 to connect to the AC750 which was connected with the internet access in the basement and if i wanted to download the cam recordings, i swichted the wifi of the RE450 to the 7490 in the living room and the download speed (without no internet access) was acceptable, much better than connecting to the 7430.

my wish is that the RE450 connects with the starlink router, the AC750 connects with the RE450 and i will set up a LAN cable from AC750 to fritzbox 7490 in the living room.

what is going on with the RE450?

the reason i write so much text is that my network is even more complicated, but the basic stuff above is what is important. and i am unsure about literally everything. maybe it's only the static ip of the RE450 that has to be changed from 196.168.1.1 to something else. how?

i know that the openwrt version of the RE450 has security bugfixes but for future scenarios like writing AC750 with the newest openwrt firmware i need to know why openwrt is causing problems for my needs. the starlink problem isn't that big because i won't use starlink for more than a year. i will switch back to 4G 5G hotspot with my smartphone, better price and much better portability.

This is an incredibly long post without a clear problem statement.

Please try summarizing the problem itself so that it is clear what does and does not work.

Since you've got a bunch of network infrastructure devices in your setup, please create a topology diagram to make it clear how things are connected. Be sure to include labels for each device:

  • brand + model
  • firmware (openwrt, vendor, etc.)
  • port labels (wan, lan, etc.)
  • IP addresses for each device

quick answer:

i did it, at least for starlink. sadly i had to reset it the RE450, now all the memories with all the wrong settings and pseudo-wifis are gone.

i have to set up the wifi channel manually. otherwise the wifi is not visible on the smartphones. strangely the wifi is not very stable. on android smartphones i can surf occasionally but on windows 10 it's not possible.

solution for instable wifi: openwrt and starlink router share the same ip 192.168.1.1 (subnet). you have to change starlink router to at least 192.168.2.1 under starlink app => settings => network the wifi is named STARLINK on fresh starlink setups.

i can't write it simplier and i have no idea about SSH.

let's see what can i do for reolink app.

found out that i set up another wifi, mode: client (somehow only with 2.4 ghz possible, because no wifi can be found in 5 ghz at the moment) to the wifi of the fritzbox 7490 e. g. through the fritzbox 7430 and Deactivate or disable the wifi to starlink (5 ghz to starlink is too weak), then i can at least access to the fritzbox 7490 with it's NAS and see them cams on my laptop. still app on smartphone doesn't work.

network wwan is mandatory.

ok i changed the channelof the wifi5ghz, now i can see other wifis.

as you can see there are somehow two subnets fighting at each other (the fritzbox 7490 subnet with activated DHCP-server (can't disable it, otherwise fritzbox 7430 as mesh repeater won't work) and the starlink subnet). as you can see i have successfully not only connected the RE450 to the fritzbox 7430 (2.4 ghz only) but also the RE450 (openwrt) with the AC750 on 5 ghz network. i have prepared the connections and disabled it. especially the 5 ghz wifi allows me to access the fritzbox 7490 NAS on a very fast way. sadly the AC750 can't get the internet access although it's connected to the RE450. i will tell the AC750 to connect to the RE450 and see if it gets access to the internet (and update the AC750.

i find this phenomen quite interesting. Repeater A (e. g. RE450 in starlink subnet) can be a repeater for repeater B (AC750 in fritzbox 7490 subnet) but not vice versa.

you need to put https:// before every int-ip address who uses the fritzbox 7490 as a router.

It would help to make a diagram of the network you intend to build. Even a simple ASCII graph like:

Starlink --(wifi)--> Box A --> etc.
would help me understand.

To route anything you must have different subnets on the LAN and WAN sides of the router. Generally you'd use the Starlink or other ISP box only as a source of Internet service and place it on the wan side outside your firewall. This also means you can't have cameras or other devices connected to the ISP device. It only serves one device, which is your first OpenWrt router.

Note that you can fairly simply move an ONT to a more convenient location by buying a fiber pre-made patch cord.

i have successfully connected the AC750 or better RE190 to the RE450 with OpenWrt and used the 2.4ghz wifi because of better connection quality. i had to deactivate the 5 ghz of the RE190 so that the interal IP address changes from 192.168.188.27 (192.168.188.X is the subnet of the fritzbox 7490) to 192.168.1.169 (192.168.1.1 is the subnet of the RE450 and somehow changing the IP of the RE450 makes LuCI unreachable therefore it can't be changed. it's interesting to see what happens if 2 OpenWrt repeaters share the same subnet, and the same IP.

this way the RE190 got internet access but since it has no LAN-port for the fritzbox 7490 it's useless. maybe it should replace the RE450.

the starlink internet access was just a test. i will cancel starlink ASAP. it's not bad and someone said that starlink established a very stable CGNAT with good quality (i haven't really tested DS-lite or CGNAT yet, i don't have that much devices and/or knowledge).

one idea would be to force everything into the RE450 subnet. but if the frtizbox 7490 changes from mesh master to wifi repeater, the fritzbox 7430 won't work, which is also an essential device.

i have to learn internal IP's and subnets.

since january 2026 the fiber internet access is canceled. of course we can move the connection closer to the middle of the house, i talked a lot with the ISP about it who was fascinated in that idea. not many customers were brave enough to do that. we only needed the access from the street. for me 4G LTE 5G is enough, way cheaper and good enough latency.

the connection for cable internet is at a better location and maybe i will sign a cable internet contract again but in the end i look more on money and future technology which mean that docsis 3.1 won't last long.
