One of my netgear r7800 lan ports(connected to a downstairs AP) sometimes go from gigabit to 100mb speed. I am going to try and change the ethernet cable later but for now can I use ethtool to force 1000mb speed? what would the interface be named if it is LAN port 3? Thanks for your help!
Don't force the speed to gigabit if there is a cable issue causing it to fall back to 100Mbps with some frequency. Doing so will break the link (extremely high packet loss or even complete drop), as all 8 conductors must be functioning properly for gigabit links to work.
Fix the cable. That is the only solution.
Or maybe force to 100Mbps until you change the cable.
