Error while installing openwrt on a linksys e2500 v4

i connected my linksys e2500 v4 to try and flash openwrt to my device using the default web gui and it went all the way till 99%. After that it just stayed the exact same and i tried pinging it and it replied with TTL=64. When i accessed the web interface gui using another browser, it just took me to te login page and it went back to the default web interface

What was the exact filename of the firmware image that you used?

openwrt-23.05.5-ramips-mt76x8-linksys_e5400-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
It is this one. I know it is not my model but i downloaded it straight from the frmware selecter. I think this is the case because they all are very similar

https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org/?version=23.05.5&target=ramips%2Fmt76x8&id=linksys_e5400

You probably need the kernel version for first time installation.

EDIT: my bad... didn't realize that the firmware image is actually common between a bunch of similar units.

That’s what he downloaded…

It probably has not worked due to not following the first time flash instructions from the wiki which require UART triggered TFTP

That is what i got when i downloaded it

Yeah... my mistake. Apologies.

Did you try the kernel version? If that doesn't work on the main firmware update page, you may need to try the kernel with the tftp recovery method.

it is fine
Also what do you mean by the kernel version

There are two images offered for download...

  • sysupgrade which is used when OpenWrt is already installed (going from one version to the next)
  • kernel which is used for first time installation from the factory firmware or bootloader/recovery

you mean
openwrt-23.05.5-ramips-mt76x8-linksys_e5400-initramfs-kernel.bin

https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/e5400#oem_installation_using_the_tftp_method

Yup... that's the one. Once that is running, you will need to flash the sysupgrade image to make it persistent, so make sure you have both files.

let me try

doesnt the tftp method require some extra tools?

Yes, did you look into this before deciding to try and flash this device?
Not all devices have difficult first time flash. This one is probably a “medium difficulty”. There are worse.

same error has occured

Also when i opened it with arc browser it showed the default interface

sad thing is if i could ssh into my router things would be so much easier

can yall help me on this?

You must follow the instructions from the wiki, which involve opening your device, attaching a serial device and starting the flash process from there.

There is no more help to give.
