I have a BT (British Telecom) hub (combined modem/router) this is connected via Ethernet to two TP-Link routers one standard and the other now with OpenWRT.
Each has an independent wifi address so yes simultaneously?
Current issue is with not being able to list packages - just the mentioned error 6
BT modem/router does not allow for a Bridge Mode.
This is how I set the OpenWRT Router up;
Option 2: OpenWRT as Access Point (AP Mode)
BT Home Hub handles routing, OpenWRT just provides Wi-Fi/switch.
Wiring
• Ethernet from BT Hub LAN port → OpenWRT router LAN port (NOT WAN).
Settings in OpenWRT
1. Disable WAN interface (in Network > Interfaces).
2. Change LAN IP to a unique address in the BT Hub’s range (e.g., 192.168.1.2 if BT Hub is 192.168.1.254).
3. Disable DHCP server (under Network > Interfaces > LAN > DHCP Server > Ignore interface).
But I am a beginner
Currently I have FTTC, and stuck with BT,(50Mbs) but hopefully will be getting FTTP within the next 6 months🙏
Not sure if this is the same situation you're running into or not, but I hit a similar sounding issue recently. After much troubleshooting, I found the issue was that the CDN that downloads.openwrt.org points to seemed to have a peering issue with my ISP. Therefore it was unreachable for me.
Some may frown upon this, but I resorted to finding an alternate mirror for downloads.openwrt.org and created A records on my DNS resolver to map downloads.openwrt.org to the alternate mirror IPs. This unblocked the issue I was encountering with my ISP and the downloads.openwrt.org CDN.
Thank you, but I’m sorry this is outside of my limited knowledge.
Does this mean that there is an apparent problem with the location of the download files - that are stored in one IP location? Isn’t then this something that needs fixing rather than finding workarounds?
You need to configure a DNS server and a default gateway for the LAN interface since you have a dumb AP setup. Set both to the IP address of your BT Hub and then it should work.
As an alternative, you can create an additional interface in Network -> Interfaces with protocol DHCP and Device @lan. This requests IP configuration from your BT Hub, including DNS server and gateway settings.
You can always check if the connection is working properly by going to Network -> Diagnostics and doing nslookup / ping on openwrt.org.
Before you go to much further with the software tab, what is it that you want to do?
I ask because you have your Openwrt devices set up as bridged APs. That type of configuration is not typically useful for things like a vpn client or similar (it can be done, but is a bit more complex).
Additionally, it is not recommended to upgrade the packages on your device unless there is a specific and known reason/need.
So, with that in mind, what do you want to do with the software tab?
Thank you for your advice, it does seem from that previously given, from various sources that I have the wrong set up - (bridged APs?) for my Router.
My set up is BT Modem/Router - Deeper Network mini - TP-Link Router (with OpenWRT). All connected via ethernet cables…
(Deeper Network is a decentralised VPN)
As I understand it ideally I want the BT Modem to give out the IP addresses it hands out through the rest of my set up, and for them to remain constant (and not to make changes to the MAC addresses). As I say my understanding and I may have it completely wrong!
I am a beginner.
I had no intention of making any package upgrade, I was just interested to try and find out what other options came with the software - not that I intended to use any.
I’ve looked at various YouTube videos, but most seem to only cover the basic set up, which at least I have managed to do, but don’t seem to go beyond this. Maybe there is nothing more I need to do.
My TP-Link with OpenWRT is an Archer AX12 - AX1500 Gigabit WiFi 6 Router running OpenWRT 23.05.0
My main router/modem (BT home hub) would be 192.168.1.254? Which I’ve tried adding but now I’m unable to open luci with 192.168.1.2 which was working fine.
I am still having this happen;
