EDUP RT2980 not booting after package Software package update

Sorry, still very much getting used to OpenWrt for the first time so I may have done something simple and stupid, but hopefully it has a simple answer! I had managed to get the router up and running and fully updated. I went to System-Software and saw in the upgrades tab that there was about 5-6 that could be upgraded. i clicked to upgrade the first package that said that there was an upgrade available and now the router does not boot (i cannot remember what the first package was- i was just going to upgrade them all). Now, after a pale green light, i get repeated red flashing lights.

Here is the github when my router was added - https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/pull/19534

I have the 112mb version and the only mesh/reset button combination that seems to do anything is pressing the Mesh button for about 6 seconds where the lights do not light up at all. With ethernet plugged in to a lan port and a computer, i cannot connect to the router and no WIFI signals are being broadcast. Without any mesh/reset button presses it restarts after a period of flashing red lights.

I appreciate the githun says:
112M with newer U-Boot:

  • Power on the router while pressing the mesh button for 3 seconds.*
  • The U-Boot Flash WebUI will be available at http://192.168.1.1/*
However, given i cannot connect to the router i cannot access that address. Pressing the mesh button for only three seconds allows the usual boot loop.

This is running a snapshot Openwrt in case that affects the options available.

Any ideas?

Upgrading packages (via the CLI opkg upgrade command or the LuCI Upgrade... button) can result in major problems. It is generally highly discouraged, unless you know what you are doing or if there is specific instruction to do so.

Thanks and I guess that was my problem. I just saw an 'upgrade' button available and thought it would be wise to do so. Perhaps some sort of warning on that page may help newbies (sic - idiots) like me not fall in to the trap?

Any thoughts on recovery? Is soldering etc the only next option?

You should be able to use failsafe mode, then reset to defaults by use of the firstboot command.

Really grateful, thank you. Managed to get in to failsafe (i presume- a constantly flashing red light is different) but i still can't seem to connect via ethernet. Windows 11 i've set IP assignment to Manual, IPv4 enabled, IPv4 address as 192.168.1.2 and IPv4 gateway to 255.255.2550, but still no luck. Tried on all 3 lan ports and even the Wan.

How are you trying to connect? The LuCI web interface does not run when in failsafe mode, so you need to use ssh to connect.

You should be using a lan port directly connected to the ethernet port on your computer. Make sure there are no other network connections at all (wifi disabled on the computer, any other connections unplugged).

IT'S WORKING! I thought that i needed to see the ethernet adapter actually connect in order to run SSH, i didn't understand the 'it's listening' thing. Run the firstboot and its back up and running with access to the Luci.

No more upgrades within the Software package manager for me!

Thanks again @psherman you've been a lifesaver.
