If I follow the procedure and successfully upgrade my Edgerouter X and then discover some issue will it be possible to go back to 23.05.5 given the fact that the partition layout has changed ?
That's a good question.
I'm no expert on this, but maybe using the Edgerouter tftp recovery method may get you back to original oem firmware and partition table?

Is there any reason you want to go back to 23.05?
In issue #17351, the Edgerouter X is reported to be affected by this issue listed in the 24.10.1 release notes:
The MT7621AT CPU in the Edgerouter X includes a built-in MT7530 switch.
If 24.10 is installed, it would be a good idea to add the ethtool package to try disabling EEE should the problem manifest. Reading through issue #17351 it seems that disabling EEE helps address the symptoms, but it is not the cure. It doesn't look like a cure will be forthcoming anytime soon.
Staying on 23.05 could be the best plan until this is resolved.
Question not exactly answered but there seems to be a good reason not to try this now anyway :}
I upgraded without problems, I believe the issue is manifested based on connected devices trying to negotiate, but I'm not an expert here. I'v been stable on 24.10 for over 30 days now, and have a simple switch/AP setup - unifi and Netgear...
