I currently am using 23.05.5. I want to update to 25.12.2. I was thinking I need to install linksys_e8450-ubi-squashfs-sysupgrade.itb but this is wrong. What file do I need to use to move up to version 25?
Thanks for your post. But I am not following.
My understanding is that I need to use an -installer image because I am moving past version 23. But I don’t see “installer” in any of the files. I don’t understand which file to download.
did you make it to
"Specifically if you are upgrading from 23.05.x to 24.10.x or newer, follow special instructions at the section below: Upgrading an UBI installation to new releases after 2024-02"
?
I am not on the stock vendor image. I am on OpenWRT UBI.
These appear to be my download options:
linksys_e8450-initramfs-kernel.bin
linksys_e8450-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
linksys_e8450-ubi-bl31-uboot.fip
linksys_e8450-ubi-initramfs-recovery.itb
linksys_e8450-ubi-preloader.bin
linksys_e8450-ubi-squashfs-sysupgrade.itb
Does "specifically if you are upgrading from 23.05.x" imply you are ?
Also
Guess you're not following the links embedded in the text.
The installer images are maintained by a third party, dangowrt. Also the dangowrt git page has further instructions.
Do not try to import your config files across major versions because many of the options have changed. Reconfigure from scratch. You should save your existing config on your PC for reference. It is a tar of the /etc/config files which you can open and read.
Thank you, mk24.
I don’t need to backup anything.
It appears openwrt-24.10.0-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-ubi-initramfs-recovery-installer.itb is the right choice but when I try to install it kicks up all kinds of warnings, including that the uploaded file does not contain a supported format.
Just like the linked wiki article's item 6 a says...
Go to
Luci > System > Backup/Flash Firmware, clickFlash image…and upload the unsigned installer image.
- You will see a very scary red warning about something like “format check failure”. This is expected. But once again, just make sure you're uploading the correct installer image file.
Ps. The file sounds right to me.
Thank you, hnyman.
The “scary red warning” you referenced is posted as step 6 under the sysupgrade procedure. So it was not clear that this was expected behavior for running the installer from step 4.
Well, step 4 is "download the installer image", 5 is "download the normal sysupgrade image", 6 is "flash the installer image"... (and 7 would be "flash the sysupgrade")
Where do we expect the flashing process warnings mentioned in step 6 to realize? In the flashing step 6 itself ? Or in the earlier innocent file download step 4?
Sorry that I am a bit nasty here. I understand that the warnings are scary, but the wiki is as clear and detailed as it can be.
Thank you for helping me figure this out, hnyman. I appreciate it.
