Dynalink DL-WRX36 bricked

Now she a brick. Every time I try to SSH back in, it just hangs.

Tried to detach mtd20 to format it; it didn't want to, so I forced it and then reformatted. Proceeded with changing the env variables and attempted to reboot. Hanged on reboot for 10 minutes so I power cycled it. Now she's a brick.

I went ahead and noooticed that you wrote the guide and most of the responses to the "oh god please help" threads.

Is there a specific guide to serial recovery for this one? As well, any idea why it didn't want to format mtd20/freaked out when I force detached it?

If this was your prompt, you were not likely booted off the USB initramfs image. That is the prompt from the stock firmware. The prompt would have been root@OpenWrt if running initramfs.

I see dis. Connecting over serial worked fine. Welp, few hours burned, few lessons learned. Thanks, all!

Ok, nope. I was modifying openvpn settings and got a prompt indicating the router was attempting to rollback. LuCI then ceased working and I could no longer even SSH into the router. I took it back apart and hooked serial connection back up, and I'm unable to interrupt the bootloader.

What gives, man?

On the serial connection you can at least see the boot messages.
Can you enter any commands and get a positive response, i.e.
uname -a or cat /etc/banner?

If so, you might do a soft factory reset with firstboot && reboot.
You'll start with the default configuration.
Just to make sure that any errors you might have made in the configuration files are gone.

Nah, can't get anything to input. Serial was working fine last night. I've jostled the wires and reseated TX half a dozen times, and it's just not taking anything now. I can get it into failsafe mode by hitting the button during boot, though.

You can check the u-boot variables from the normal SSH console.

Unable to SSH in. I successfully flashed the device with OpenWRT. It crashed when I tried to update a VPN setting. I restarted the device - it ceased to permit SSH access. I then attempted a soft factory reset. No dice. Then a hard factory reset. No dice. Then serial access - Can't transmit.

Can you still get to the failsafe?
The variables are visible also from there (assuming the fw_print is in the image).

Yeah, I'm in the failsafe, looking at the OpenWRT shell, but it's not taking any input over serial...

In failsafe mode - it's not accepting any commands from the terminal. At all. I just checked for connection with a multimeter, and all the lines are good. It just ain't taking any signals.

If you are able to enter the failsafe mode, you should be able to connect via wired lan via SSH, and then you could check if the u-boot variable enabling serial console operations is set. (But I am not sure if that variable only affects u-boot: should the serial console be available after a full boot, in any case?)

Bur it is also possible that your serial connector is fried...
