Duff OpenWrt One with no way to use M.2 post

Hi,

I have an OpenWrt One and I've just bought an M.2 2230 SSD to put it in. However, having opened up the machine I've discovered that there's no 2230 post attached. There is a 2242 post attached. I presumed this was screwed in so got pliars on it to try and unscrew. Having got nowhere, I looked in the box and discovered a bag of bits, including what looks like an M.2 post.

Unfortunately, having disassembled the machine I've discovered that the post doesn't screw in to the PCB and there's no screw included to secure it; none of the screws in the bag fit. There's no screw on the back of the 2242 post that I could use either:

It seems SinoVoip has sent me a duff router as there's no way to actually fit a 2230 M.2 card.

What have other people received? Did your board come with a means of attaching the 2230 post?

Thanks,

rah

I presume yours was form a different batch then. Could you say when you recieved it?

This is the second post recently about the standoffs for the M2 slot not being attached to the board. One post with 2 standoffs in the parts bag, and now yours.

You might post a query on the Bpi Forum. They would be the best authority to explain how to attach the standoff properly. https://docs.banana-pi.org/en/OpenWRT-One/BananaPi_OpenWRT-One

Interesting. I searched the forum before I posted for more information but didn't find anything like my problem. Any chance you could provide more information about this other post, or even a link? Thanks.

This is what's stenciled on my board as well. Unfortunately I think that's just the PCB design and doesn't say anything about the manufacture or assembly dates.

The label on the side of my cardboard packing box has "2025-10-30-MP" next to the WAN MAC, I imagine that's probably the date of manufacture.

What FW was flashed on it on arrival? Typically they come flashed with the current flavour that’s available at manufacture.

I totally missed that, thanks. Clearly this is the new norm: the OpenWrt One does not support M.2 2230 cards. It needs something else, possibly some soldering, possibly a screw (sold separately?!) to be able to support M.2 2230. And no information whatsoever from SinoVoip.

This is not cool. Very disappointing.

No idea I'm afraid, I immediately flashed my own image and didn't record anything about what was already on there.

I've added a note to the wiki page:

Believe me, it supports both. Same M-key/2 different form factors. If you look at the silk screening on top of the board it delineates the mount screw location of 2230/2242. I have an M.2 2230 @512GB and a 2242 @128GB both Gen3 single sided. Both came with a mount screw.

I know we had posts from members trying to install 2242 double sided drives that the 2230 mount stud interfered with.

The mount in your parts bag should have a nipple at the board end. Drill a hole the same size or cut down the nipple flush and apply a bit of epoxy to secure.

I’d be PO’d too. You can also ask your question on the mailing list

We're using the word "support" differently. What I mean when I say 2230 is not supported is that when you receive the product, you're not able to insert a 2230 card in the M.2 slot with the product as-is. You have to physically modify the product in order for it to accept 2230 cards.

I know. You can see the mount post location in the photo I posted. Which is intentional

There are adapter kits to attach to a 2230 drive so it fits into a 2242 slot. This would leave the board unmodified so a 2242 drive could potentially be fitted later without a 2230 post in the way.
