Dual WAN on Dlink DIR-825 B2

My router:
Router Model:Dlink DIR-825 B2. chip atheros
I am currently on firmware:
Firmware Version: DD-WRT v3.0-r51362 std (01/16/23)
Based on this, a few questions:

  1. How can I configure dual wan on this router?
There is very little information on the Internet on this subject.

If it is impossible to configure dual wan on an atheros chip on dd wrt, then:

  • Can I install openwrt on this router?
  • Can I set up dual wan on openwrt on this router?

Does it make sense for me to change os for this feature, which I really need.
Please give a practical and detailed answer.
Thank you.

It appears you are using firmware that is not from the official OpenWrt project.

When using forks/offshoots/vendor-specific builds that are "based on OpenWrt", there may be many differences compared to the official versions (hosted by OpenWrt.org). Some of these customizations may fundamentally change the way that OpenWrt works. You might need help from people with specific/specialized knowledge about the firmware you are using, so it is possible that advice you get here may not be useful.

You may find that the best options are:

  1. Install an official version of OpenWrt, if your device is supported (see https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org).
  2. Ask for help from the maintainer(s) or user community of the specific firmware that you are using.
  3. Provide the source code for the firmware so that users on this forum can understand how your firmware works (OpenWrt forum users are volunteers, so somebody might look at the code if they have time and are interested in your issue).

If you believe that this specific issue is common to generic/official OpenWrt and/or the maintainers of your build have indicated as such, please feel free to clarify.

For DD-WRT related questions please use the DD-WRT forum.

Yes, OpenWrt support for DIR-825 B2 is available.

See https://openwrt.org/toh/d-link/dir-825#installation for installation instructions.

Once you install openwrt, check out

Perhaps some experienced person on this forum knows how to install Dual Wan on a DD WRT, so I felt it was not superfluous to ask a question about this. Well, anything is possible.
If not, then I would like to know if DUAL WAN will definitely work on open wrt on this router?

Sure it will work on OpenWrt on this router.

This is the openwrt support forum but there are multiple articles about dual wan for DD wrt on Google

https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Dual%2C_Triple_(and_probably_quad)_WAN_with_multiple_active_WAN_links_and_source_routing

https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Dual_WAN_with_failover

If you'd like support for DD wrt please post in the DD wrt forum

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/

I read all this articles - but they very old (or only broadcom) and dont work for me.
Second - i ask many question on dd wrt forum.
No one could explain anything clearly to me or help me. Why do you think I came here?

Similar question, why would you think the openwrt community would know about setting up ddwrt? There’s basically zero similarities between them.

I have an 825, while mwan will ‘work’ unless your links are very low bandwidth or you run old, unsupported versions you’re not going to see great performance

Lol.

I have a bunch of DIR-825 and DIR-835. I used to run DD-WRT on them. In my very humble and biased opinion, OpenWRT is a much nicer OS. I started with Attitude Adjustment on these routers and never looked back. BrainSlayer is nothing short of a genius but DD-WRT is too closed up for my comfort.

For the DIR-825 though.... I strongly suggest you back up the CALDATA before flashing the latest OpenWRT version on it. The latest has a patch that merges unused flash space after the caldata with the normal kernel/file system space, providing much more space available for packages. Most probably flashing OpenWRT will cause no issues, but better safe than sorry.

The other warning that is fair to give is that the backup loader on these routers is very picky. I suggest you take a look at the device page. Hopefully you are running Linux and can use the script posted there for your first flash. After that everything is easy.

One great thing about the boot loader though is that it is practically impossible to permanently brick these routers unless you really put effort into it.

The DIR-825 is a pretty nice router. It's old. Draft 11n. As @jdwl1o1 mentions, it won't break any speed records. Give mwan3 a try and let us know how it goes.

I don't think it MUST know, I assumed someone MAYBE knows. (And most likely someone knows. Why can't there be people who understand two operating systems?) I'm not on a farming forum or something like that.

Aw man... relax. This is a really friendly community. And you're getting one of the best Linux distros I've worked with for free.

Again... check the device page... give it a try, and ask any questions that may arise.

OpenWRT will work great on your router. I can guarantee that.

mwan3 will work... but what you get out of it will depend on what WAN links you have, the limits of a 10y old piece of hardware, and how much effort you put into it.

I only need Dual WAN with failover.

You shall get as much as you put effort in. It's reading time.

Start w/this:

Use the Firmware Recovery Mode. That's the tough part.

Once OpenWRT is up and running, set an admin password. Then go here:

That's an mwa3 set up with failover.

Good luck!

Ok, thanks.

This page

recommend me factory install the:
https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/19.07.2/targets/ar71xx/generic/openwrt-19.07.2-ar71xx-generic-dir-825-b1-squashfs-factory.bin
but in this, i found newest version:
https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/22.03.3/targets/ath79/generic/openwrt-22.03.3-ath79-generic-dlink_dir-825-b1-squashfs-factory.bin

What to do?

@tmomas maybe the wiki links were not properly updated from that version.

There was no factory image available after 19.07.2, but now it is again. Dataentry updated accordingly.

Why are you pretending that I'm not here?

Dir 825 b2 has Atheros AR7161 chipset
Old link (with "ar71xx") - good, but new link - with "ath79" ???
Is that normal?
