DSL drops throughout the day with BT HH5a

Hi,

I hope someone can help me out, I'm completely out of ideas

I have a bthh5a with OpenWrt 18.06.2 r7676-cddd7b4c77 software. Also, I just moved flats and got a contract with Plusnet for their ADSL2+ 8-17mb broadband. After a day or two of using their router, I got this bthh5a from eBay, as I wanted 5Ghz Wifi (lots of 2.4G wifi around) and replaced the one of Plusnet. Probably was not the best idea too swap, as now the 15 days line adjustment has passed and my speed has been drastically reduced by DLM because of frequent disconnects of the bthh5a (as far as I remember, I was also getting disconnects the first few days on the Plusnet router, however it was a couple of weeks ago, will swap routers today and test) Router is connected to a line extension (i.e not to the master socket) and there are no phones connected to any of the other extensions . My connection stats are:

I have noticed that disconnects happen first thing in the morning when a smartphone/laptop first access the internet. They also happen sort of randomly through the day, sometimes connection is fine for ~6hrs, sometimes it reconnects one or two times in a few minutes. I do not want to request a DLM reset if the problem is still occurring. Here is part of the log from LuCi for the last few hours (log visible in LuCi shows ~12hrs, 11 disconnects in that time).

Many many thanks! Any help would be very appreciated.

If you ask me your error counters look absolutely terrible... You could try to power down your router/modem for >15 minutes and then power it up again, this should reset your downstream error counters (as it is your modem that detects them) for the upstream error counters that should have no effect as it is the DSLAM/line-card that keeps these counters and you will a hard time resetting these from your side
If you do this run 'date ; /etc/init.d/dsl_control status' from your routers command line (similar to the luci output) and paste the output here. Then repeat after, say 60 minutes to get an idea about the error rates your link encounters.
I need to worn you though, I am no expert on long ADSL links, so no guarantee that anything will come out of it.

In addition to that, check if it's really (always) only the ppp session going down or if the whole device is rebooting. Make sure that flow-offloading is disabled, as you don't need it for those throughputs and because it introduces an additional source of instability (spurious reboots). If your ISP supports PPPoE, it may be worth trying that configuration (in comparison) as well (as that is probably better tested than PPPoA).

fwiw, I suggest connecting the modem routers directly to the hidden Engineer's test socket if you have a standard NTE5 Master socket.

You could revert to using the supplied Plusnet Hub Zero router and configure the HH5a as a wireless access point.

Thanks for the reply, I powered down the router as you indicated. It has been 2hr and connection has been fine (no drops). Router is still on extension socket (i.e. not master). Here are the errors on that time:

I will repeat the test with the OpenWRT router connected directly to the master socket.

@slh will test with PPPoE and see what happens. Could you please indicate me where to disable flow-offloading.

@bill888 thanks for the suggestion, will connect for a day or so to the test socket and see what happens. I guess that if this continues tomorrow, I will just use the Plusnet Hub Zero and ask for a DLM reset.

This is still highly suspicious, why is down smaller than up, and why is up much larger than ADSL2+ actually permits? As far as I recall ADSL2+ offer ~24Mbps in total with most of it assigned to downstream.

18.06.x stable for HH5A, uses older kernel 4.9.

Flow-offloading is only available from kernel 4.14.

Any idea what might be causing that? Maybe router faulty or problem with the line?

So I connected directly to the test socket. Another two hours have passed. FECS went down by a lot, also HEC. Could this mean some sort of problem with the house wiring? Here are the results:

Thanks again for the help

These do not match well anymore, you should reduce your shaper settings to make it actually effective...

I would continue that test for at least a full 24 hours, to be really sure that this cleans up things and leads to a more reliable connection. Since we humans have no good sense for RF-pollution it is quite easy to declare a configuration "good" even when all that happened was an epoch in which the problematic noise source was silent for whatever reasons. But if this stays decent that would point at your in house wiring potentially having issues.

absolutely, house wiring installed before say 2000 should automatically be put under suspicion.

Could you observe it for a few days and see if it's happening roughly at the same time?

Last year I had something similar (was using ISP modem-router at the time, and used to have drops around 2 in the morning everyday. That lasted for a few weeks then went away. My guess was that maybe it was something in the line affected possibly by environmental factors, and then they fixed it.

thanks @moeller0 will continue monitoring

@Hegabo for what I have noticed, happens much more often at the very early morning, say between 2am-8am. From yesterday to today I had about 11 drops in about 12hrs. And in since about 8am evrything has been fine. But its a good point, will take note of the times and report them to my ISP.

Question, do you use powerline adapters and or outside IR-triggered LED lights which might be activated by local wildlife? I have seen reports of either being nasty sources of noise if activated. Powerline adapters, should leave ADSL frequencies alone, but ...

That and/ or problems with the line filters/ splitters are very much possible - even likely in older houses with many previous occupants who each messed with the wiring to their own requirements.

fwiw, you may wish to consider installing your own Openreach VDSL face plate later. These work great with ADSL too. If your master socket is the discontinued NTE5A style, you can still pick up a 'Mk3' faceplate off ebay for about £10.

Plenty of info online as to how you could install a new 'hardwired' or 'plug-in' broadband-only extension socket or cable respectively.

eg. RJ45 to RJ11 faceplate to modem cable.
https://youtu.be/trFUjOPPutM

(Openreach would probably charge up to £140 to fit a new NTE5C master socket/VDSL face plate and do any extension rewiring you request)

Max up and down look much more reasonable. I also quickly checked the OpenWRT router and it is the same as before:

OpenWRT router:
Max. Attainable Data Rate (ATTNDR): Down: 9.696 Mb/s / Up: 19.997 Mb/s

Could these be an issue with the OpenWRT modem? or firmware fault?

The 'max data rate' figures are just a best 'estimate' of what the line might be able to achieve. It does not reflect 'actual' maximum data rate seen on the line.

You'll probably find the speed test will return around 1mbps download speed as reflected by the lower 'Data Rate' figures reported by both routers.

You have the Plusnet Hub zero figures transposed. 17416 is the maximum attainable Downstream speed, not Upstream btw.

Data rate: 910/1151 (up/down)
Maximum data rate:	1108/17416 (up/down)
Data sent/received:	18.1M/193.8M
Noise margin: 6.4/31.6 (up/down)

Update: I see you have started discussions with Plusnet regarding what looks increasingly likely to be a line fault:
https://community.plus.net/t5/ADSL-Broadband/Very-slow-speed-after-initial-15-days-DLM-Reset/td-p/1637191

The '19.997 Mb/s' upstream max. attainable data rate seen by HH5a looks like a reporting bug to me.

Yeah, I swapped the Upstream and Downstream, thanks for pointing that out.

Yes, I have contacted Plusnet and they indeed want to send an engineer. What i am a bit concerned about is that if it was indeed the BTHH5 router, I will be charged £65. But I guess there is not much I can do about it. Maybe it was not a very good idea to swap routers during the initial period :frowning:

I rather think this is an indication of a line fault if you look at the crazy downstream Aggregate Transmit Power (ACTATP): Down: 18.3 dB / Up: 12.8 dB given that you only use 1/10 of the admittedly estimated downstream capacity of the link...
