What about booting your windows xp machine with a linux livecd so you could use a more modern browser? I bet it has a CDROM drive or usb port.
By the way it sounds like you will use this device in a soviet era nuclear power station where you can't find anything newer than windows xp 
Just make sure to not blow yourself up...

(1) Attitude adjustment 12.09 installed and running.
Using Windows 7 + 'Ultra Simple Web Browser 2.0'
generates page errors when confirming configuration selections using admin pages connected to 192.168.1.1. Instead configure the router using a modern version of firefox.

*Note no requirements for 'magic number' edits to openwrt images from archive.
