I’d like to install OpenWRT on a D-Link-DGS-1210-52 (hardware version F1).
I found the OpenWRT firmware here: https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org/?version=23.05.2&target=realtek%2Frtl839x&id=d-link_dgs-1210-52
I found this Table of Hardware article (https://openwrt.org/toh/d-link/dgs-1210-16_g1) which describes the D-Link DGS-1210 rev G,F (Realtek) hardware suite but does not mention the 52 port switch, but it does state under the WebUI installation instructions that ”Known working F1 firmware versions for this procedure: 6.20.B009”.
Could someone please confirm that:

Can the OpenWRT firmware listed above can be installed through the D-Link WebUI using the following instructions?
- Make sure you are booting using OEM in image 2 slot. If not, switch to image2 using the menus:
- System > Firmware Information > Boot from image2
- Tools > reboot
- Upload image in vendor firmware via Tools > Backup / Upgrade Firmware > image1
- Toogle startup image via System > Firmware Information > Boot from image1
- Tools > reboot
- Make sure you are booting using OEM in image 2 slot. If not, switch to image2 using the menus:
-
If so, I assume I need to upgrade the D-Link firmware to 6.20.B009 before proceeding.
I’ve already bricked one switch this week, so I’d appreciate a second opinion before I proceed.
Thank you in advance.
Final Solution:
I was able to successfully install OpenWrt on my device using the following steps:
-
Set host computer (linux laptop in my case) to 10.90.90.9
-
Connect host computer to switch with an ethernet cable
-
Navigate to 10.90.90.90 in firefox browser
-
Login to switch using admin as the password
-
Check Device Information (http://10.90.90.90/homepage.htm) page:
- Hardware Version is F1
- Firmmeware Version is 6.10.007
-
Boot from image 2 slot:
- Side Menu: System > Firmware Information > Boot from image2
- Top Menu: Tools > Reboot Device
- Do you want to save the settings ? Yes and click Reboot
-
Log back into device
-
Backup both firmware image 1 and image 2 via Tools > Firmware Backup & Upgrade > backup (just in case)
-
Upload image in vendor firmware via Tools > Firmware Backup & Upgrade > image1
- The OpenWrt image is linked above and I did rename it to a shorter, more human friendly name.
-
Toggle startup image via System > Firmware Information > Boot from image1
-
Tools > Reboot Device
-
Wait for device to fully reboot and login to OpenWrt at 192.168.1.1.
-
Done!
