Don't use the Join Network button on the scan page. Manually configure the wifi client. Edit the same interface as you were using for the smartphone, change the SSID and the security.

Okay, I'll try it tomorrow. What about the connection interface? You said about DHCP, can you tell us in more detail please?
Using the Join wifi network button once to connect to the phone set up all you need for a routed client which will connect to a wifi network and obtain an address via DHCP, and access the Internet via that network.
All you need to do after upgrading wpad is reconfigure that existing wifi interface to connect to the school network instead of the phone. Don't use the Join button again.
