Connecting OpenWrt device to network hosted by another OpenWrt

I'm trying to, as the title suggests, connect two OpenWRT machines. The machine which acts as the AP is actually hosting two Wi-Fi networks, one which is on a "vlan" interface. This is so traffic cannot traverse between the two networks at all. The "vlan" network needs to support only internal communication and no internet access, whereas the LAN network needs internet access.
What's strange is the second machine is able to connect to the provisional network, or LAN network fine. It then does some business on that network with the host machine, which allows it to connect to the "real" or LAN network.

To add to the mystery, the client machine gets assigned 192.168.1.240 on the wlan0 interface once connected to the LAN network! However ping requests starting from either machine don't seem to work. Further, the client machine cannot access the outside internet once connected.

Can you elaborate here... I'm not understanding what "some buisness" means here, and how you are testing the connections to the "real or LAN" networks... can you give specific examples?

Your 'client' OpenWrt device has the same subnet as the main LAN, and therefore will not work properly. Try changing the address of the client LAN interface to somethign else, like 10.0.0.1.

The "business" is essentially just a simple python script which exchanges information over TCP. Of course, that only works on the VLAN provisional network.
After changing the IP address, I'm no longer able to ssh into the client machine like I was doing before. I get connection timed out on 10.0.0.1

Ok... more specifics would be useful here...

A host runs a python script which exchanges information over TCP... can you elaborate here:

What is the IP address of the host running the python script?
What is the IP address of the target of the information exchange?
What are the host operating systems? (windows, linux, mac, etc.)?

What combination works? what combination doesn't work?
What is the desired result?

Turns out you were right. Changing the IP address to have a different subnet was the solution. Thanks again dude, you're amazing.
