Can't start OpenWrt 19.07.2 on UniElec U7623-02

Hello.

I dad new buy a router UniElec U7623-06,the factory firmware is openwrt 14.07,and I upgrade to 19.07.2 with [7623a-unielec-u7623-02-emmc-512m-squashfs-sysupgrade-emmc.bin].But I can't reboot it now.The TTL show below,anyone had the same problem?

Very unlikely[0], the vendor firmware might be based on a Mediatek SDK which used OpenWrt 14.07 as a base, but it has very little in common with OpenWrt 14.07.

In cases like this, testing a current master snapshot (the usual caveats apply) would be the first thing I'd try.

It's trying to mount a root file system on the second partition of the eMMC; /dev/mmcblk0p2. But the vendor firmware doesn't use the partition table (because it uses the eMMC as if it were a raw MTD flash device), and thus the partition table has nonsense in it.

You need to fix up the partition table on the device. Which is slightly non-trivial if it doesn't boot, so here's how you can do it from u-boot just by loading the existing MBR, poking the bytes into place, then writing it back again.

I've submitted PRs to fix this in OpenWrt master (PR#3230) and 19.07 (PR#3237) by hard-coding the partitions on the kernel command line.

You can now (well, once they're merged) upgrade directly from the vendor 14.07 to upstream 19.07 or master.

I know this is an old thread, but I just ordered one of these devices on the strength of the device page for it. This thread raises a question...

The unit comes standard with 8MB of eMMC. Does the fact the partitions are hard coded mean that upgrading will not work on devices with more than 8MB of eMMC? Will OpenWRT only see 8MB of it?

If I recall correctly, it's only the vendor image that has hard-coded partitions on the kernel command line.

We currently build an image which can be used for sysupgrade from the vendor firmware, but that doesn't update U-Boot so that image still can't move things about too much. We then need to do a full sysupgrade (even to the same version) in order to flash the full system.

I think sysupgrade even has magic code to preserve the partition table where you've extended or added new partitions at the end. Let me know if you have problems and we'll definitely be able to fix it; we've been working on the image process for this board recently and it happens to be powered up on my desk right now.

Correction: The sysupgrade in the vendor's OpenWrt 14.04 doesn't overwrite the full eMMC; only the kernel onwards. That's why you need to upgrade using the 'legacy' image, and that's why the kernel has the partitions hard-coded when booted from the legacy U-Boot.

If you then do a sysupgrade using the full image (without 'legacy' in its filename) it will upgrade U-Boot too. That gives you all the RAM as well as dropping the partitioning hacks so it can use the partition table properly.

So what are the ramifications of my device having more than the standard 8MB eMMC storage? If I'm reading this correctly then if the partition(s) before the kernel are the same size on mine as they are for normal 8MB devices that it should upgrade with no problems. If that is the case, then the worst thing that happens is that for the first part of the upgrade process when the hardcoded partitions are used then OpenWrt only sees 8MB of space. After a sysupgrade to the full image, I take it that the entire storage space will be seen and utilized.

Incidentally, when I ordered mine I asked for it to come with MT7615 + MT7603 Wi-Fi daughter boards for 4x4 5GHz AC and 2.4GHz N. The vendor said OpenWrt didn't support this configuration and asked if I could do the development to make that work. I am thinking they just meant that their included 14.04 doesn't support this configuration. I am assuming there will be no issues populating this main board with whatever Wi-Fi daughter boards OpenWrt currently supports. Am I correct?

I've ordered four Wi-Fi daughter boards along with it, so it will be interesting to experiment in any case.

I don't know if anyone has tested with devices larger than 8GB. I have a vague recollection of the OpenWrt standard block device sysupgrade process at least trying to do the right thing, and install the partitions that it needs but leave the rest there (and use the full device). If it doesn't work, it's fairly simple to fix. Please let us know.

And yes, I believe that any PCIe device that OpenWrt supports ought to work fine.

HI, I posted this a while back Build Help MT7623-evb and I believe that this device is very similar to the unilec. The original build I tried was with 19.07 and it wouldn't boot, would you mind having a look at my post to see if I am encountering a similar issue as the OP please?
I have still not managed to make a bootable firmware using snapshots and with 21.02 the build fails with duplicate dts entries, I've not put much time in but this part I think I can fix.

My own u7623 finally arrived and I've upgraded OpenWrt on it to the latest release. I have more questions now than before:

  • How does one use an initramfs image on this board? Is it uploaded with the flash tool? I haven't been able to get this to work.
  • Does the overlay root really only have 40MB free? Or did I not do something right in the upgrade?
  • Where are people normally getting the preloader needed for the flash tool? I ended up extracting mine from /dev/mmcblk0boot0 with a hex editor - is that what people are doing? Can it be put on the download page like the Banana Pi one is?
