is the kind of thing appearing in the log. I'm using https://openwrt.org/toh/bt/homehub_v5a as a guide, where the text says "BT and Plusnet support PPPoE protocol. (Sky/NOW and TalkTalk do not support PPPoE on ADSL) "

I don't know if looking at the wan/adsl config page will help, but please see below
I'd be grateful for any help getting me going

Have you studied the installation guide for HH5A?
https://openwrt.ebilan.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=266
See section 7.5

If you are using ADSL, you can also use PPPoA protocol. (Remember to delete the ATM bridge)

BT login also requires a non-empty random password. eg. 'BT'.

No PADO packets would mean either the modem's physical link is not up, or the provider does not support PPPoE.

Or a wrong VLAN is used, or the ADSL circuit descriptors are wrong... a PADO timeout is pretty unspecific, unfortunately.

Thanks. According to the guide, it is indeed PPPoA that should be used. Shall try as per guide and delete ATM
