Can't connect one device, "inactivity timer" (but it's not)

I've had OpenWRT running purely as an access point on a WRT1900ACS for some years, but just got a Pixel 7 Pro, and it refuses to stay associated almost all the time. Once in a while it will "stick".

I see a bunch of errors like this:

Tue Dec 6 01:39:53 2022 daemon.info hostapd: wlan0: STA 4a:redacted:ff:e0 IEEE 802.11: authenticated
Tue Dec 6 01:39:53 2022 daemon.info hostapd: wlan0: STA 4a:redacted:ff:e0 IEEE 802.11: associated (aid 1)

Tue Dec 6 01:39:58 2022 daemon.info hostapd: wlan0: STA 4a:redacted:ff:e0 IEEE 802.11: authenticated
Tue Dec 6 01:39:58 2022 daemon.info hostapd: wlan0: STA 4a:redacted:ff:e0 IEEE 802.11: associated (aid 1)
Tue Dec 6 01:39:58 2022 daemon.info hostapd: wlan0: STA 4a:redacted:ff:e0 IEEE 802.11: disassociated
Tue Dec 6 01:39:59 2022 daemon.info hostapd: wlan0: STA 4a:redacted:ff:e0 IEEE 802.11: deauthenticated due to inactivity (timer DEAUTH/REMOVE)

I updated OpenWRT to 22.03.2 R19803 just in case, no change.

Note this is upon initial association, this is not a timeout later. I am unable to connect far enough to pull an attempt for DHCP.

I have LOTS of discussion that sounds similar. I tried this fix without visible impact.

https://openwrt.org/faq/deauthenticated_due_to_inactivity

I see lots of references to something like "dreaded Auth10k bug" but I can't make enough sense out of them collectively to know if it applies, much less if there is a fix.

I've also tried enabling and disabling inactivity timer in the gui setup for the radio.

I have two other AP's (not OpenWRT) and can associate fine with them, and they are on the same LAN side and properly pull DHCP, etc. Unfortunately the OpenWRT one is the primary, central AP in my home.

I've got maybe 20-30 different devices (IOT stuff) that all connect just fine, it's just this new phone.

Any suggestions why this may not be working for this device only?

Hmmm... I may have found it (more or less by random chance).

I had "802.11r Fast Transition" enabled. Disabling it seems to have fixed the issue.
