Can't change ip address on Dynalink DL-WRX36

No, that's not what I'm asking.

I'll ask another way...

What is the IP address of a device (computer/phone/tablet, etc) that is connected to the main router and working with normal internet access?

I get IP 192.168.1.189 on my laptop from the main router

I really appreciate your efforts!

You need to use different IP subnets for LAN and WAN on each device that is supposed to forward packets.

Yep. Turned off wifi and connected directly with ethernet cable.
The router goes through whatever it goes through and becomes unreachable until I reset it.

Does not sounde credible, disconnect reconnect cable, or refresh dhcp address.

The lan has a static IP (the one I'm trying to change).
I'm only trying to change one number on the lan IP address.
Changing 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.2 should not be so challenging!
The wan and wan6 are from DHCP.

Since your main router uses the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, this should be pretty easy.

  • Start by resetting your AP to the default configuration.
  • Disconnect all network connections from the AP except for one ethernet connection to your computer.
  • Disconnect all other network connections on the computer (i.e. turn off wifi, unplug any other ethernet connections).

Then, follow the guide I linked earlier. If you are still unable to change the IP, please show us exactly what you are doing.

I really do appreciate your efforts. A lot. This is such a weird problem.
I have done everything you suggested several times, and a few more things as well. Nothing has worked.
I have not tried using a desktop for this. Maybe my linux machine will have some sort of magic in it. Gonna give that a try.
Thanks again!

Aha!

If you're trying to use the device as a simple AP, you need to connect the link from the router's LAN port to a LAN port on this device.

Unless you've rejigged the config, the WAN port isn't used by a non-routing simple AP. It's a member of the LAN, so assuming you've got a cable between the router and the AP, make sure both ends are plugged in to LAN ports.

Most importantly disable dhcp server on LAN
Optionally change config to dhcp client.
Now you connect lan to lan

Thanks for the help everyone.
After a few days of utter failure, I have just been face-palming myself for not considering the most obvious solution ever. See, I thought the main router had to have the 192.168.1.1 IP address. Now I've discovered that it doesn't.
SO, I'm letting ol' cranky-pants router keep its precious IP address as an AP, and I changed the main router IP instead.
Yes, it has been that simple all along.

But thanks again for the help!
