Can't add additional wireless interfaces - QCA9880 (NBG6716 on ath79 snapshot (nov. 26))

Hello community!

I'm on kernel 4.19.85 and I'm using snapshot r11595-5d2a900163.

I am pretty sure that with older ar71 versions 18.x I was able to add virtual interfaces. Now since I switched to ath79 it's not working.

Is QCA9880 supposed to support this? I read on older posts that it may require a proprietary driver, is it still the case? If so, how do I do this?

Could it be some overwritten settings on one of the partitions? I don't really know what I am talking about here to be honnest, I just read this here :smile: :

Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this problem?

I have verified on the board and the chip is a QCA9558-AT4A, but in LuCI it says 9880.

Probably this is related to some changes how the hostapd service for wifi is set up...

Don't forget that snapshots may have bugs even though they are most of the time in a stable state.
Please try to update your snapshot first or use the 19.07-rc and try again

I have migrated from ar71 to ath79 because I needed the new kernel to do flow offloading. I also have the most recent snapshot.
19.07-rc is in ar71. I don't know if this matters for the future, but I was told ar71 is abandoned. Also when I tried it I had a bunch of errors.

ar71xx on kernel 4.14 has also flow offloading support!
Flow offloading depends on kernel >= 4.14.

Yep almost no bugs, but there was a change in how hostapd service is set up and this throwed errors for some configurations with multiple virtual interfaces like described in the posted thread.
If you want to stay on ath79, the try with latest snapshots.

(FYI ar71 snapshots have not updated for a long time (so kernel <4.14), except for the 19.07-rc, which has the updated kernel indeed, but a lot of errors too, at least when I tried it yesterday.)

@juppin New snapshot that came out today seems to be working, I am able to add virtual wireless interfaces :smiley: But... I realized that I am missing the 2.4G wireless adapter. Should I open another thread for this? I did reinstall an older version to confirm, it was there but it's not anymore.

Try to regenerate your wireless config with:

  • Backup old one with: mv /etc/config/wireless /etc/config/wireless.bak
  • Regenerate config file with: wifi
  • Add you changes from your backup

You need to do this over ssh!

Can you imagine a working state with something newer than 15.05?

Have you done any tweaks / hacks to your hardware or art partition?

Can you also post the output of dmesg for 15.05?

I don't think I have altered the art partition, but I could be wrong. From what I recall, I have only tried to write to mtd7 and 8. When I flash via tftp the stock firmware, I don't rewrite this partition?
I have noticed that cat /proc/mtd output a different structure depending if I am on the stock firmware, ar71, ath79...

I haven't changed anything to the hardware.
