Got a new linksys e8450 recently and nicely installed rel 24.10.6 using the github "special" instructions, thus the router is UBI.
Want to install 25.12.4. Believe I have the steps down, but would appreciate some confirmation. Plan to use the LuCi way.
Did very little configuration since the 24.10.6 install, but did set the ip address to 192.168.4.1 to stay away from my "production" router.
Know to use an ethernet cable.
Know to confirm the checksum.
Plan to keep 192.168.4.1 as the ip address, is that an issue?
Know the pc needs to be between 192.168.4.2-254.
Will have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and default gw 192.168.4.1.
Have downloaded the firmware (note ubi and .itb for this device):
openwrt-25.12.4-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-ubi-squashfs-sysupgrade.itb
Know should not set keep "settings......".
Plan to use the LuCi firmware upgrade screen.
Plan to wait a good amount.
Plan to redo configurations that were done.
Will continue on from there with configurations.
Is there anything I am missing like a factory reset?
Can I leave the router using 192.168.4.1 for the upgrade instead of switching back to 192.168.1.1?
Since you've already made the jump to 24.10, this should be a very simple upgrade. There's no reason you should not keep settings, as that device has not changed much between 24.10 and 25.12.
If you're sure you've got the right image, just reflash and it should be back in a couple minutes. The wireless DFS scanning is what takes the longest on these things, so if your connection is via the wired port, then it should be back in about a minute (that's what I see on mine anyhow).
If you at all unsure about your image selection, you could use the LuCI Attended Sysupgrade (luci-app-attendedsysupgrade in the Package Manager, then "Attended Sysupgrade" appears on the System menu) package to get the image and install it, as it does all the grunt work of figuring out device name, file system type and all that, ensuring you've always got the right one. (And ASU also keeps any packages you may have installed after the initial setup, saving you that effort.)
Thank you for your help. The firmware update was successful!
I sort of took your advice. First installed `luci-app-attendedsysupgrade' and went through the motions to download 25.12.4 firmware. This confirmed the module name I had planned to use was the right one.
However, to really do the upgrade I used the regular LuCi upgrade process using the module I had uploaded the other day. I set off the option to keep settings...., being I hardly had any settings / configs. I was being conservative. I was concerned that I had read somewhere that going from 24.10 to 25.12 still had some UBI conversion to take care of. Just being super save.
Also one thing I am unsure of regarding using "attended sysupgrade" is whether we can use wifi (or is it still recommended to use ethernet) to get into LuCi to start the process with the router needing to be connected to internet.
This seems to open up more potential issues being some of the forum posts regarding attended operation having problems with the servers on the other end. Or it could be that if the early part of the process that uses the servers ends up with an issue that no bricking of the router would occur. Difficult to know all the angles.
Regarding wired v wireless for upgrade, both work without issue. The ASU clients (LuCI ASU or owut CLI) request an image, download it to the device, and only after verifying the image and its checksum install it, so it's about as safe/reliable as it gets.
