I understand, someone has already asked about the BE3600 RD15 version, which has a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port but only 256MB of memory. However, there is also a BE3600 RD16 version, which seems to have 512MB of memory. So, is there hope for OpenWrt to be ported to the BE3600 (RD16)?
It seems we can gain SSH access. If it really works, then this would be a perfect WIFI7 router.
Sorry, my English is not very good, so I am using machine translation, and there may be grammatical errors. Please forgive me. Please write to me.
If you do the porting work involving ath12k and other less walked paths then sure.
Your speculations are anyone's guess.
Fact is, ipq95xx is not supported by OpenWrt, yet - and neither am I aware of anyone actively working on it either. This means we aren't even at a point to consider the lower memory cutoff yet, so anything about that is speculation as well.
However -and this is pure guesswork- if we look at highend commercial routers using Qualcomm 802.11BE radios, we do see them being equipped more RAM (usually twice, compared to 802.11ax), if that is merely a result of dropping DDR4 RAM prices(?) or a requirement of the new wireless chipset is anyone's guess. …but, I'd put my money on the later, even more so if Xiaomi felt a need to double the RAM for RD16 - and I wouldn't (at all) be confident that these 512 MB RAM would be sufficient for ath12k and OpenWrt (QDSK tends to make quite brutal decisions to trim down RAM usage for garbage-end devices (e.g. 256 MB RAM for 802.11ax), which are not possible for a reasonable firmware).
512 MB RAM are not comfortable for ipq807x (as in the Xiaomi Mi AIoT ax3600 router), so even for ipq807x I wouldn't buy a device with less than 1 GB RAM (again). This situation is very unlikely to improve with ipq95xx, and I would not recommend relying on that.
Apart from that, never hope for new hardware support to magically appear in the future, always go with fully supported (at least in main snapshots) devices (and even more so when it comes to the SOC).
Alright... then I might have to use the official firmware based on OpenWrt 18, which is featureless and garbage.
Btw., I realize that the Xiaomi BE3600 is using ipq53xx, not ipq95xx, but I would consider their RAM requirements to be comparable (so the above applying to either equally well), it's a very closely related (just cheapened/ clocked-down) SOC (and same radios).
(and no, there's no one known to be actively working on ipq53xx so far either).
Have you got a full bootlog, and how can you tell the difference between RD15 and RD16?
I've been reading further, the Xiaomi BE3600 Pro is known as the RN01, same spec as the RD16 mentioned but in a completely different housing.
I also do not understand this Openwrt 18 SDK comment, according to CodeLinaro there's only two SDKs available for IPQ53xx, 19.07 and 23.05.
