Linux Mint, Gl.inet A1300, 24.10.5. First time user of OpenWRT. I can access the router via 192.168.1.1 only when offline. I have a vpn and its working seperately from WRT I think as I have not tried to set it up yet via Luci. From what I can tell it assignged 192.168.1.0/24 but no version of that works either. Once I can get into the router online I can progress slowly. Thanks.
Define offline? What are the details of the connections when you can reach the router vs when you can’t? What is upstream. What is your computer connected to?
And also, what is the purpose of your openwrt router in your network (a router? An AP?)
A diagram can be really helpful here.
disable VPN, access router, win.
it's not a router/openwrt issue.
Thanks for the replies. I have a simple setup. 1 cable modem connected to the Wan port of router, 1 cable from Lan port to computer. If I disconnect from internet and turn off vpn, I can access router via 192.168.1. From the guides, it read like another IP address was given to the router and all I could find was the 192.168.1.0/24 I also thought it a vpn issue but even when I access the internet w/o vpn, I still can't talk to router? That's why I thought it was a IP address issue.
It sounds like the vpn is on your computer? Yes, not unexpected that you need to disconnect the vpn - when you are connected to a vpn (on the computer itself), the computer will not be able to access local network resources. However, that doesn’t mean you’re disconnected from the internet.
This is not an openwrt issue. It is the vpn on your computer.
Yep, I went back into the vpn for the 15th time and found the firewall setting that was doing it. Will mark it solved thanks. Got to download openvpn-openssl and luci-app-openvpn, which my provider said I needed and now to figure out that.
P.S. Other than checking force http to https, is there anything I can do to be more secure while I try to get the vpn setup?
Suggestion: Don't expose your LAN to others while setting up the router (just elaborated on your use of HTTPS on the local network).
Otherwise, no.
Just FYI, most VPN software blocks traffic from circumventing the tunnel. It's common behavior. Otherwise, you'd have a leak. Hence your VPN provider suggested configuring your router for VPN instead.
Just curious, which firewall, Linux Mint?
What firewall settings did you change to resolve the issue?
You should be able to make a route for 192.168.1.0/24 via your network card while connected to your VPN.
