BPI-R4 upgraded to 25.12 and SFP+ Module not working

I upgraded my BananaPi R4 to 25.12 from 24.10.5 and deleted config during upgrade (due to the upgrade renaming the SFP ports). After the install, my SFP+ RJ45 module would not connect. I checked the logs and saw the following 2 messages

[3 Mar 2026, 00:14:23 UTC] kern.err: [ 18.426444] mtk_soc_eth 15100000.ethernet sfp-wan: validation with support 00,00000000,00000000,00000000 failed: -EINVAL
[3 Mar 2026, 00:14:23 UTC] kern.err: [ 18.437387] sfp sfp1: sfp_add_phy failed: -EINVAL

I did a search on the forum and couldn’t find anything related, a downgrade seemed to bring the device online as usual.

I’ve tried a fresh reinstall, factory reset, a different module (I got these in a pack of 2), and simply unplugging it and plugging it back in again. All resulted in no change. In the logs, I would see the above 2 messages every time I’d plug the module back in again.

I managed to get this fixed, basically, the aquantia phy kmod package is no longer included by default. If anyone else has this issue, they’d first need to confirm the chipset used on their SFP module and follow my instructions here. I believe future releases are going to include the aquantia kmod package, but not other vendor kmods
