Belkin RT3200/Linksys E8450 WiFi AX discussion

You already said how you got it to choose the working system. The layout has master and slave system code. If you had a serial console you would see:

  *** U-Boot SPI NAND ***

     1. System Load Linux to SDRAM via TFTP.
     2. System Load Linux Kernel then write to Flash via TFTP.
     3. Boot master system code via Flash.
     4. Boot slave system code via Flash.
     5. System Load U-Boot then write to Flash via TFTP.
     6. System Load U-Boot then write to Flash via Serial.
     7. System Load ATF then write to Flash via TFTP.
     8. System Load Preloader then write to Flash via TFTP.
     U-Boot console

Press UP/DOWN to move or Press 1~8 to choose, ENTER to select

You can use the stock firmware upgrade page to flash the stock firmware and it'll recover the other system which currently contains the non-functional OpenWrt image.

Sadly I was also unsuccessful with the installer:

My mtd backup wasn't successful using Luci (mtd2 was 0 size) but ssh backup worked fine.

@jow concerning:

What is the recommended way to proceed with this for upgrade? @elan suggested above replacing firewall with firewall4. Or do we just wait to upgrade later for a fix?

I have three RT3200s. On the first, there are no errors reported when trying to upgrade. On the second and third, I see the errors above. Not sure why the discrepency because all three have just firewall. Certainly the first has more packages on it and I use PBR if that is relevant.

Making a pull request to fix a typo is something I can do. But the other patches are out of my league  Could you give it another shot to get your patches merged?

Need some help please. Just flashed my new Belkin with openwrt-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-ubi-initramfs-recovery.itb.
Unfortunately I cannot access the URL 192.168.1.1. I got a Connection refused error. I can access the router using SSH.
I already did a powercycle. After that I still cannot access the Web Frontend and still have SSH available.
So I am kind of stuck here and would appreciate some help.

This looks exactly like flashing a from a running UBI-recovery on a device which hasn't yet run the installer. As a result, you will have to connect the serial console because now you have a non-UBI bootchain which cannot load anything from the UBI-formatted flash.

Try opkg update

opkg install luci :slightly_smiling_face:

Tell me if is good after

Have a nice day

Probably you have downloaded the snapshot image from downloads.openwrt.org rather than using the image with built-in LuCI offered on the installer project page on github.
From there you can do full backups, but you will need to return to vendor firmware before flashing the installer itself.

Thank you Dopam and daniel. Actually I downloaded the file from the Github page.
I installd Luci and did the backup procedure.
To return to the vendor firmware I just make a factory default or do I have to flash an image?
And just to be sure. Maybe I flashed the installer and not the pure recovery file. Where can I find put which image currently running?

That's what I did, but it's not clear how to switch between them. I can't ssh to 192.168.1.1

I want to confirm that these are steps required to flash non-UBI version

  1. Using stock upgrade UI flash openwrt-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-initramfs-kernel.bin
  2. Manually set IP to static
  3. Connect using LAN cable and ssh to 192.168.1.1 <--- this part doesn't work
  4. Using sysupgrade flash openwrt-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

Am I missing something?

Facing the same issue

To return to factory image after the backup procedure you just need to power cycle the device, probably multiple times and actually disconnect it from power for a few seconds. Do not flash anything while running the recovery image you just used to make the backup.

If you tried making the backup via LuCI, make sure the file size make sense as users have reported that they found their files have 0 bytes. Scroll up in this thread to find the correct sizes the files are supposed to have and use the console dd/scp procedure as described if needed.

It would be great if someone with a genuine device (ie. never been converted to UBI layout) could provide the serial console output while trying to run the non-UBI version, so we can see what's going on and fix that. All my devices are running UBI firmware and the above procedure to use non-UBI firmware works for me -- but only on devices where the whole flash had already been re-written multiple times using OpenWrt...

I cannot help on that, my device from amazon (sale offer as returned device) came with OpenWrt half burned into it, and I could put it to work thanks to help received here.
I haven' t got the original firmware.

But it is working OK, so I don't think I will ever need to go back to stock firmware.
Will it be possible to revert with the firmware from other unit, or youuu need a backup of yours?

I have burned UBI OpenWrt a few weeks ago, and did not sysupgrade since then.

Should I make a sysupgrade? Were there important bug fixes since then?

I am afraid that if I try a sysupgrade and it fails for some reason, I won't be able to put it to work again.

@alleyu2 @openwrt-ninja A recent commit broke the online ImageBuilder.
The problem with firewall4 accidentally being selected for install should be resolved after commit 000825d7925f4 and once buildbot mt7622 builder has run build #408.
Hence in a few hours from now, auc and luci-app-attendedsysupgrade should work again.

Should we not replace firewall with firewall4? I did that to make it work . Should I go back to firewall now or stick with firewall4?
