Belkin RT3200/Linksys E8450 WiFi AX discussion

Thanks it worked. But took over an hour to upgrade all three routers and retain settings, etc. Would there be an easier way to achieve this for any future upgrades?

@loyukfai: ipv6 is buggy

?? i has never make that on my router daniel... is a problem you think

just i has flash recovery installer .itb then ubi sysupgrade.itb ...

is good when same ?

I enabled both hardware and software offloading, then I reboot and the router crashed, no wifi, no internet. I had to unplug and plug the router to make it works again.

IIRC from this thread, hardware offload is buggy. And software offload has issues with IPv6 which is a general OpenWrt 21.xx issue.

IPv6 isn't terribly important to me though, my ISP doesn't even give out IPv6 addresses...

Cheers.

Hi, is OpnWRT port stable enough for usage as dumb AP in 5GHz 802.11ax only? (no routing or ip6, just a bridge between ethernet and WiFi).

Yes. Even WiFi mesh is rock solid for me. So can't see how wired would not be.

Has anyone noticed that the E8450 5G WiFi is more stable in AC mode compared to AX mode? If I set to AX (80 MHz) mode, I get WiFi warning sometimes when playing online game with my iPad. When set to AC (80 MHz) mode I do not see the WiFi warning (yet). My iPad tends to drop to 2G more often when the 5G is set to AX mode, even tho. my iPad is AX capable, and Iā€™m sitting like 15 feet from the router with line of sight.

Kind of a bummer tho.

My E8450 is running the latest mt76 driver from master.

I am on 5.10.78 with no instability on wifi. 5Ghz AX mode is terrible compared to 2Ghz in terms of range. None of my IoT devices are having any connection instability on 2Ghz, 52~ devices in total on my network. 1,500sq/ft house.

Edit: I do have a dumb netgear dir655 AP balancing an extra 9 devices which also possibly masks any instability issues as a fallback device (?)

OpenWrt SNAPSHOT r18070-49f615022c / LuCI Master git-21.314.39463-d4092b1

https://snapshot.raintank.io/dashboard/snapshot/JzCSXSySI1BLYSKGnXxJOG4SUcE5HPUZ

Edit: Bumped to 5.10.79 this morning to verify the upgrade process, no issues and stability seems to be fine so far.

Is anyone else having a problem with this router constantly crashing? Mine is constantly losing connection. Then when I go to log in to the router I see that it has actually crashed. I have tried everything. I cannot figure out why it is doing this. I do not know enough about OpenWRT to troubleshoot what exactly is causing the problem. Can someone people help me out? I purchased this router because everyone was saying it was a good router to get. This thing is very unstable! It is stressing me out badly.

I'm sorry things are not working out as smooth as they should for you. This is still a relatively new hardware platform (MT7622) and you are using a development snapshot/nightly build, so unfortunately problems are to be expected.

Please submit what ever you find when accessing the router via SSH and

cat /sys/fs/pstore/*

That will allow for further analysis and most likely provide good hints towards where the problem could be.

Looking for some guidance on my 3x RT3200 system. I've been persistently running these in 802.11s (non-BATMAN) since about July without any issues till about mid to late October. There was a mt76 driver update i think around the 23rd of October and that's when my issues started to pop up. The mesh system would seemingly fall asleep, but it was difficult for me to figure out which device was causing the issues.
I'm currently running OpenWrt SNAPSHOT r17769-333f93333e / LuCI Master git-21.284.67084-e4d24f0 which i built using ImageBuilder on the Oct 18th. I've periodically updated since, but subsequently had to always revert.

Over the weekend, i decided to setup BATMAN with a new master image since there was a few more tools to help diagnose. I've found that when i setup BATMAN, one of the RT3200's never fully establishes a connection. Cannot batctl ping from the other units to the 'bad' one. And, the bad one shows the connection as 6Mbit/s 20MHz tx and rx via the web and iw.

I'm guessing this could be driver, but not 100% sure. Any guidance on how i could further diagnose what's going on with this one unit? I've had to revert back to my Oct. 18th build.

Looking at the git log, it is likely that either

or

or (less likely)

As you said October 23rd, I suspect the 2nd (or 3rd) commit as it matches that date.
@nbd any ideas on the above?

Bro I have literally tried every firmware available. I have tried yours, snapshots, and I think there is a community build. I just cannot seam to get any of them stable.

Is there an actual way to TFTP the firmware on this router? I think a possibility could be something got corrupted along the way. The reason being is when I was converting to ubi I accidently flashed a mediatek file instead of the e8450. However, I reflashed the proper file.

I tried to TFTP like I used to do with my r7500v2. Where you unplug the power while holding the reset button and waiting for the power light to go from blinking real fast to slow. Then trying to send the firmware. However, it keeps telling me it cannot connect to the router. I even tried sending it when the power light was flashing fast. The same thing happened.

Do you have country code set? Do you have the 'wpad-mesh-openssl' package installed?

I also have 3x RT3200's in a mesh setup. I have the mesh on channel 36, 80Mhz width.

I thought issues might have developed with it very recently since I upgraded my 3x routers using the new installer, but now I think it was just a configuration issue - I left DHCP enabled on one of my extension devices. I think having fixed that configuration issue my mesh system may be fine again, even with the latest snapshot. Still testing.

Gents, is wpad-mesh-openssl necessary or not? It is unclear because mesh apparently works with wpad-openssl only.

If you have hardware flow offloading enabled, try disabling it, I had similar problems and that stopped the crashes.

I have a similar issue with my router. It close PPPoE session after some random timeout ~15 minutes, and can't connect anymore (but continuously try) till reboot. In the log it prints kernel stacktrace with error. I will attach it later (have no access to the router now). What I remember is a message about some timeout for eth0 interface. Its happened after update to latest SNAPSHOT build with unattended sysupgrade few days ago.

wpad-openssl is the most full-features wpad build we got, it contains all features wpad-mesh-openssl contains. The latter is missing support for WPA-Enterprise and a few other non-mesh related things.

wpad-mesh-* = wpad-mini-* + 802.11s + SAE

OK thanks, I will go back to wpad-openssl now then.
