thank you for this information, i'll try with external power and see if it works fine.

Yes but there can still be interference with 2,4 GHz WiFi.
Interference of USB connections with 2.4 GHz WiFi is an issue only for USB 3. The USB port of the Linksys E8450 (probably for this very reason) is USB 2.0 only, ie. only 4 pins, no additional USB 3 SerDes lanes.
Yes, that should solve it.
I've started to see crashes in my RT3200 (running 23.05.5 r24106-10cc5fcd00):

I see it about once a week. Wonder if this has been fixed in 24.XX?
Should be the same issue as what I have reported here.
Edit:
To add on, this only affects the 2.4GHz WiFi interface as issue is with the mt7615e driver code.
So far, I have not seen such crashes with the 5GHz WiFi interface.
Edit 2:
This issue is still present in the master/main branch code, so it'll likely still be present in 24.x releases.
Could it be related to WDS or lack of STP? I use the former and not the latter (when is STP needed?). What's odd for me is that it just started happening without configuration change having not occurred before for months or years. The only change I can think of is one or two new WiFi devices. Now I see this hard crash about once every few days.
The specific thing that triggered crash this morning was PC connected via LAN and also connecting to WiFi 2.4 GHz (because I wanted to try to extend Zoom session to TV).
IMHO, it is unlikely due to either.
STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) is really only needed if you have multiple LAN switches connected. Its main purpose is to prevent a broadcast storm if you accidentally connect your network into a routing loop.
Back to the crash, my suspicion is that this is likely connected to the situation where a 2.4GHz WiFi client is repeatedly connecting and disconnecting, maybe due to weak signal, and this likely causes a corruption of the mt76
driver data structure.
The reason why I suspected it may also be connected to hostapd
was because there was an upgrade to hostapd
code to a newer version sometime in Sep 2024, and since then I observed quite a few hostapd
related issues.
Would you expect disabling any 2.4 GHz AP's on my main router to resolve this issue (I can leave 2.4 AP's on my downstream WDS-connected routers?)?
@daniel are you planning to issue a new installer when the official 24.XX release arrives? If not, I may as well run the latest installer now to prep my router for it.
Yes, disabling 2.4GHz interface for your RT3200/E8450 will work-around the crash as the mt7615e driver will not be used.
So far, I have not seen any crash from the mt7915e/5GHz WiFi interface.
Is it enough to disable any 2.4 AP's in LuCi?
Yesterday I switched on my RT3200 after 6 months to use it as WDS client connected to Zyxel T-56 as WDS AP. It was negotiating very low speeds in the range of 400 megabits only at 80 Mhz ( it could not negotiate 160 Mhz - 2 meters from the WDS AP) in the 5 Ghz. However by disabling the AP mode on RT3200 in the WDS connection and leaving only the WDS client mode - I got 2+ Gigabit connection ( not sue on 80 or 160 Mhz), however I confirm that something doesn't work. I tested with the latest snapshot and with RC7.

PS: Found this reported issue. Seems the same as mine :https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/issues/17530
I understood from this thread way back that 160MHz doesn’t work properly on these devices owing to hardware limitations.
That's interesting.
Does this bug kill the following plan?
Current situation: Linksys E8450 is the main router upstrairs, which also acts as a WDS AP. Netgear WAX202 is a WDS repeater downstairs, with a multimedia PC connected via Ethernet and bridged to the WDS client. GL.INET Flint 2 is unused (but was successfully tested as another repeater).
Proposed setup: GL.INET Flint 2 takes the place of the main router, which should also act as a WDS AP (i.e., completely takes over the current role of Linksys E8450). Linksys E8450 goes downstairs and becomes a WDS repeater, and the multimedia PC gets connected to it. Netgear WAX202 becomes unused.
Well I think your setup will work, as you will not use RT3200 as a AP too, but only use it with ethernet. My test showed more than 2 Gigabits connection ( I can not remember if it connected to 80 or 160 Mhz).
However I used the RT3200 as WDS client and AP at the same time with 160 MHz without any problem before, but it was a long time ago.
So what I am planning to do is to test with 24.10 rc1 first and then with any Snapshot between the OKD fix and 24.10 - unfortunatly we can not use 23.05 as this will break the router.
I had the same plan as you replace Cudy Wr3000 with RT3200 as WDS Client but also as AP in order to see if my network will become better with 4 spatial stream router than 2...but...
I
You misunderstood - the E8450 will be used both as a WDS client (5 GHz only) and as an AP (both bands).
