Belkin RT3200/Linksys E8450 WiFi AX discussion

What config are you using? Are you using the wifi tx HW offloading for example?

I'm mostly running the default config on 22.03.3. I've set my wan interface to static, set my ssids, set security to sae-mixed, and country codes to us. The rest looked fine at the default settings.

So this morning I noticed the 2.4ghz wireless has stopped working and luci is unresponsive. I've attached some more logs.

Did you enable CPU frequency scaling?

I do have the cpu governor set to ondemand. If I recall correctly it was crashing before I had changed it but I will change it back to default to test.

Could try setting it explicitly to userspace as ondemand got set as default a few months ago (not sure if it's in 22.03).

The OP is using Linux 5.10 from OpenWrt 22.03, so the default there is to set it to userspace which will result in the CPU operating at the highest clock frequency unless it is told by the user to do otherwise.

You are correct I'm running 22.03.3. I've changed the governor back to the default and rebooted. It shows to be using userspace. I've got logread -f running in ssh to log. I guess now I wait. Are there any common problems I should be aware of with the Linksys E8450?

Just got home and found the router in recovery. I've attached the logs. Any help would be appreciated. I've read through this thread and others and have yet to find anything that solves the problems I've been having. I'd really like to get this stable because it works well (when it works) on my dsl connection running sqm and other packages.

Same. I was on 22.03.02, both my radios were disabled and not configured. I was able to set it back up through the command line, but luci isn't running, idk why.

I understand your pain. I've been contemplating flashing the stock firmware and returning it. I appreciate all the work the community has done to support it but it's just not stable enough at this moment.

Sorry it didn't work out for you, it could be a defected product .Probably a bad idea, but before you return it, try the latest snapshot and see if it still crashing.

I don't have any issue with 22.03.02, but I switch to SNAPSHOT anyway just for the 802.11ax performance fix.

So far the SNAPSHOT has been stable for me, but there're a few bugs:

  1. Reboot is not working unless apply the fix mentioned in
    Belkin RT3200/Linksys E8450 WiFi AX discussion - #3454 by 72105
    Personally I would just apply the performance scheduler instead of "ondemand"

  2. If you switch from asu, the firmware package(kmod-mt7915-firmware) might come missing from the build image, and wireless will fail to initialize. If that happend you might have to use Ethernet cable to install the firmware package manually. To avoid this, you can just download the official snapshot build and flash it.

  3. It's not really a bug but mtk has removed the HE160 capabilities from the driver. For me it doesn't matter. Unlike HE80, HE160 on RT3200 can only utilize 2x MIMO due to the hardware limitations.

My new USB-TTL converter and probe leads finally arrived ... after paying USPS some cash because the seller didn't pay the full shipping cost. :frowning:

On top of which, it's a Chinese knock-off fake FTDI chip, and not a real FTDI chip, but at least it does seem to be working with my old FTDI drivers.

Anyway ... my pride is definitely NOT intact. :wink:

The router is booting up, and the original factory uBoot is showing up in the serial output, which (I think) means that I didn't upload the correct recovery-image in step 8 of the OpenWRT installation instructions on github.

So I guess that now it's time for me to set up a TFTP server and try to get the factory uBoot to load the proper recovery-image ... is that my correct next-step?

Good to hear you managed to recover the device, and it's much better to discover this simple mistake (don't worry, you are by far not the first person to fall into that trap) than finding a broken flash chip or otherwise damaged hardware.

And yes, next step is to setup TFTP server and use that to this time load the correct image (the one with installer in its name). Then you can watch the installation procedure and should end up in recovery image that this time will allow you to successfully flash the sysupgrade (=production) image.

Edit: And using this simple experiment you have also found out that flashing a wrong image can soft-brick the device when running the stock bootloader. This has been one of my main motivations to replace it with something more robust, with dual-boot which actually works, fall back to TFTP, ...

Does anyone happen to know how to install Trojan? Releases · frainzy1477/luci-app-trojan (github.com) I don't know which version of those dependencies should be installed. I know it's armv8 for E8450, but still the terms are very confusing for a newbie. For example, trojan-go_0.10.2-armv8_aarch64_generic.ipk on Releases · frainzy1477/trojan-go-for-openwrt (github.com) can't be uploaded to be installed, despite the name says armv8. Many thanks.

Sadly I had no luck with the latest snapshot. It still crashes. For now I will return this unit in case it is a hardware defect and may revisit it in the future. Thank you and the others for trying to help.

Thanks Daniel, my E8450 is now fixed, and I'm cleanly booting from power up into the sysupgrade version of OpenWRT that's on github.

That seems like a good point to take a break, and then start fresh tomorrow on the factory-backup and snapshot update steps.

FWIW, the whole TFTP upload process seemed a little undocumented, but once again the "How to unbrick a bricked router Belkin RT3200" YouTube video helped out tremendously.

@nazarewk So kinda good news, I got the wifi up to 20 devices connected at once without an issue!! For about 8 hours, then it crashed. I've never gotten it up over 12 heavily used devices without it kernel panicking. However, this time it panicked in a different place, so I may be dealing with two crashes. This one happened during an eap rekey:
