Belkin RT3200/hearbroken/ bricken/first time WRT used

Hi,

Very hearbroken. Have been advocating for Open Software. Just purchased Berklin RT3200. Was very excited. Watched icannotgetafreename on youtube to install open WRT. Followed direction. Connected router to computer with ethernet cable. I connected to it via WIFI. Connected via 192.168.1.1 //went into updatsoftware installed recovery OPenWRt as the video showed. Alt-tabbed to play my game. Went back. No router. I think I connected via WiFi -- video did not say I have to connect via ethernet cable. Very upset. Try reset-- hold button--- 3 seconds. Router does not show in Wifi /connect via cable, doesn't detect it.

I am just heart broken. It looks like the openWRT required cable to connect/not sure/ because I connected via Wifi to it, to install update. Brand new router doesn't work, not detected. Heart broken.

Anyone has any advice what to do. I just lost faith --- and just upset that instruction did not talk about need to connect via etherent connect. Just don;t know what to do-- absolutly devostated. New router, been saving for long time, excited to join openWRT --- and just no openWRT nor I have router that works, or reset. (using old router to connect to the internet. 0

Please help. TT_TT -- completely devastated. anyway to reset router? or is it bricked for good? Thank you for any help.

Edit 2: It worked! per advice of Hnyman --

  1. disable your old router/WiFi.(turn it off)
  2. restart you computer
  3. MAKE SURE YOUR ETHERNET CABLE IS NOT CONNECTED INTO THE INTERNET SLOT-- IT MUST BE CONNECTED TO ETHERNET PORT 1,2,3 OR 4 when you connect via 192.168.1.1

[when I did the openWRt/ I was connected via INTERNET port on Belkin]

Now why would you go watch some random utube video? And more so, you then come here to complain about why it didn’t work with absolutely no details as to what you actually did?

Did you think to look at the official wiki quick start guide?

Maybe take a quick look at Failsafe/recovery to see if you might recover/reset to initial state?

Other than that, you’ll need to provide a lot more info. Nobody wants to go through forty questions to get to what is actually wrong.

If you can, please connect to your OpenWrt device using ssh and copy the output of the following commands and post it here using the "Preformatted text </> " button:
grafik
Remember to redact passwords, MAC addresses and any public IP addresses you may have:

ubus call system board
cat /etc/config/network
cat /etc/config/wireless
cat /etc/config/dhcp
cat /etc/config/firewall

You are right. I am complaining. I am not that smart. I just relied upon the video. Yet, is it wrong to trust people in this community or who claim to be in this community, that if something did not work our, I could just reset it? I thank you for your help. But, I just dont understand anything you wrote. I just wanted to embrace openWRT. This sort of things, as it happened to me, can't be happening to others. Its real money I lost. I waited long time to save them and get router.

None of the commands work for me that you wrote. I am sorry.
C:> ssh root@192.168.1.1
ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.1 port 22: Unknown error

Do you have your computer directly connected to the router via Ethernet? This is required since WiFi is disabled by default for security reasons.

I connected it via ethernet cable (I reconnect to WiFi on my old router to write here).

It says Realteck PCIE Famile Controlled.
Physical Address :(my address)
DHCP enabled (Yes)
Autocnfiguation Prt (IP numbers here)
IP4 subnet (numbers 255.255.0.0)
Next lines that have info:
NetBios Over TCPIP EN. Yes
Link-Local IPv6 Address (lots of numbers)
Ipv6 Default Gateway (blank)
Ipv6 DNS servers (3 of them with numbers)

What exact file did you attempt to install? (Filename)? Where did it come from?

I installed:

openwrt-23.05.0-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-ubi-initramfs-recovery-installer.itb
I donloaded it 11/17/2023 in anticipating of getting my RT3200

from

I used this utube video:
watch?v=_JchPPHkFN8

edit: is it a fatal flaw to have updated via WiFi?

The connection type has no role, at least for OpenWrt itself. (And would sound strange that Belkin/Linksys OEM flashing routine would require that, either.)
But as WiFi is initially disabled in OpenWrt, you need a wired connection after the installation in any case...
(Like the step 1 in installation advice in @daniel (dangowrt) site implies:

Connect any of the LAN ports of the device directly to the Ethernet port of your computer

That is also the correct file.
Although I am surprised if a new RT3200 would have so old firmware, that the "unsigned" version was accepted. I would have thought that you would need "signed" file.

Edit:
I looked at the third-party video from YouTube and it looks ok to me, no crucial errors there.

I am not quite sure what your actual error is...
Can you connect to the router from LAN via wired?

I have both lights working on the Belkin Router.
While I am connected to WiFi via old router -- I am also connected to Belkin router via ethernet cable now. the internet light blinks from time to time.

I tried 10 second reset- as I watched in video, and i did a hard reset: hold reset for 10 sec. => nothing happens.
when I hold reset, unplug and then plug again, and hold it for 5 seconds, the light turns yellow. After a while the lights turn white (both the power and internet) and then internet blnks for a while. My ethernet connection says "Identifying" and nothing else. The router does not show up on WiFi.

When I connected initially and put the program to update, I alt-tab to play a game....so I don;t know what happened. I just know when I came back, there was not Belkin visible on wifi or via ethernet.

If you have two routers, the both might default to 192.168.1.1 as their IP, and you have routing problem.

I don't believe that you have actually bricked the new router, but you just have a connectivity/routing problem.
Easiest would be to connect via wired directly from computer to the rt3200, and keep the other router disconnected so that there are not two 192.168.1.1.

this is what it shows under Ethernet:

Link speed (Receive/Transmit): 1000/1000 (Mbps)
Link-local IPv6 address: fe8[edit]%4
IPv6 DNS servers: fe[edit]1%1
fec0:[edit]%1
fec0:[edit]%1
Manufacturer: Realtek
Description: Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller
Driver version: 10.[edit]
Physical address (MAC): 00-[edited]-DE

I restarted my computer. I did not connect to WiFi (old router). I am connected to ethernet to Berklin (openWRT). when I type 192.168.1.1 -- no connection.
when I connect to wiFi 192.168.1.1 gives me WiFi (old router).

So - no, I can't connect to Berklin after OpenWRT upgrade.

Please see @hnyman ’s request.

  1. Turned off the computer
    1.5) Turn on the computer
  2. not connected to WiFi
  3. only connected to via ethernet to Berklin with OpenWRT
  4. type 192.168.1.1 into browser -> unable to connect
  5. type ssh root@192.168.1.1 into shell -> connection timed out.
  6. connect to old router (not openWRT) via WiFi -> connected, 192.168.1.1 connects me to admin page.

Uhmm why is OpenWRT disabling WiFi? What's the technical reason/ explanation behind it?

Because it isn’t secured at firstboot.

Was your old (wifi router) powered off during steps 1-5?

Can you ping the router from computer?

This was it!
Let me edit top for others to know what was the problem and the solution!!!
