Bad sharing performance on tp-link archer c7 (18.06.01)

I have a TP-LINK Archer C7 v2 running OpenWrt 18.06.01. It has an USB2 hard drive attached to it, partition is ext4.

I'm having performance issues sharing this partition over wifi. I've tried with:

  • nfs ~6MB/s
  • samba ~8MB/s
  • ftp ~10MB/s

hdparm throws about 30MB/s read speed
wifi is 5ghz ac, iperf results are around 300-350 mbps

Not sure what's going on, protocol seems to be relevant, but can't find any issues or bottlenecks.

Any ideas? Will be happy to get at least 15MB/s

Have you checked CPU utilization while transferring with all these 3 protocols? As far as I know samba is more demanding than ftp, so the results do make sense. Don't know about nfs though.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've just checked (using ftp), the cpu is maxed at 100%. I wasn't expecting this, seems the router is not powerful enough to do this.
