I hope you're doing well. I'm encountering an issue with my OpenWRT setup on a Xiaomi AX3600 router and could really use some assistance.

I'm experiencing problems with my Wi-Fi configuration on OpenWRT. Specifically, I'm getting error messages like "Failed to add station" and "refusing to associate station" in the kernel logs. It seems that my device is struggling to add new stations (devices) to the network, and it's also hitting a limit of 128 connected devices.

The hardware I'm using is a Xiaomi AX3600 router with the following specifications:

  • Model: Xiaomi AX3600
  • Architecture: ARMv8 Processor rev 4
  • Target Platform: qualcommax/ipq807x
  • Firmware Version: OpenWrt SNAPSHOT r25142-a42075435a / LuCI Master git-24.040.70477-23ebdb3
  • Kernel Version: 6.1.77

I've tried restarting the device, checking the hostapd configuration, and verifying the compatibility of the hardware, but the issue persists.

Could someone please provide some guidance or references on how to troubleshoot and resolve this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you saying you have 128 stations/clients connected to this device?

I have the exact same problem with a Dynalink DL-WRX36, except the limit is 512 stations. If I run dawn, I can trigger the problem in less than an hour. Without it, it takes about 10 days. I think the driver must be leaking connections somehow, though I have yet to figure out why. The last occurance started with the following error:

@JustAnotherEndUser thanks! I read through them and it seems to match. I do have a SSID on both 2.4 and 5GHz radios. It appears that the order matters in their definition, but I think mine is already in the order they recommend (5GHz first).

For the moment I made my own variants of two bits of advice from the related bugs by adding the following to /etc/rc.local:

Now I'll just wait and see if it reboots or not. I have remote logging setup, so I'll still catch the errors proceeding any reboot (so long as I notice in the week before they expire).

If you have 2.4G & 5G WiFi with different SSID name, will it be better?

I wish it were like that, not a single device is connected, it doesn't allow connection and this message appears.

shrug... "solution". IDK what else to do, unless someone can point me to a known, stable version to build from. At least it's just a dumb AP and not my main router so I don't lose anything with a quick reboot.

I did manage to capture a full syslog dump from the most recent failure, meaning the recommended script to balance the interrupt handling didn't help:

Hmmm, just poking around the interwebs, WLAN.HK.2.7.0.1-01744 seems to be the latest version found in most Linux firmware repositories (e.g.) vs WLAN.HK.2.9.0.1-01890 above. Maybe I'll try downgrading when I get home.

Since I am already doing a full build, I was hoping there would be a clear way to select or change the firmware at build time, but I couldn't find one. However, what I did find is that all the recent versions get downloaded during the build:

So you can just pick one, copy it to /lib/firmware/IPQ8074 on your router, and reboot. I'm now running WLAN.HK.2.7.0.1-01744 with SNAPSHOT r25550-e40471e923, which has Kernel Version 6.1.81.

Not sure if this is related but I have issues with my Dynalink DL-WRX3 5Ghz networks

I just upgraded from 23.05.2 to 23.05.3 stable
After upgrading and restoring my Config Backup Archive, I had an issue where the WiFi networks were present but not enabled. I enabled them, but then only the 5G raido 0 was active. If I clicked restart on the 2.4Ghz radio 1 it would not activate.
I then reset my router at System>Backup/Flash Firmware
(A full reset may not be necessary, maybe try deleting and recreating your wireless networks first)
And recreated my networks
After enabling my 2.4Ghz network Radio 1 automatically became active and same goes for 5Ghz Radio 0.
But, networks created on 5Ghz Radio were not visible to any devices.
However! I don't know if it's just my devices, but Radio 0 5ghz has never worked properly with my O-WRT. Not in 23.05.2 either. Even when radio 0 is on, my devices can't detect my 5G SSID.
The first time I installed O-WRT My 5Gz network worked for moments (devices connected) and after a reboot (or something I'm not aware of) 5G networks wouldn't show again on any devices scanning, and then I disabled the radio.

Don't know if this is a known issue, let me know if I should start a new thread for it.

I have suffered this before. What channel is your 5GHz radio set to? Try other channels between 36 - 48 and see. Remember to correctly set your region's regulatory domain.

So this did seem to fix my issue, I successfully created and connected to a 5Ghz Wifi network. :pray:

+1. I down?graded to 23.05.3 when it came out. It seems to use WLAN.HK.2.9.0.1-01385 and has been very stable (uptimes of weeks so far, and only not longer due to power outages).
