Received it in the mail about 7pm lst night. Setup was q dream and was just about finished when I realised that the base firmware only had incoming VPN's not outgoing (the use-case for which I had upgraded). Did a little googling, wound up on here. Was unsure if wrt could give me an outbound tunnel but was gonna bin it otherwise (im lay about returning things, particularly when they are probably my own fault for not researching properly to begin with).
Anyway, que about 18h of hell. arrived atr work was told they didnt need me today so have just spent the day fewrris buellering the outta this thing and nothing seems to werk, am beginning to hate the thing.
So, what happened was I was following the 1.0 instructions. I updated the first firmware then before installing the second i went ssh'd in to change the root password as per the intructins, it asked if i was sure yes/no/fingerprint i said yes and thats when the proverbial hit the fan, about 3am this morning iirc. yes i wish id noted down the key or for that matter remembered the password but it seems a lifetime ago now. it would have probbly been something like admin while i finished setting it up anyway.
since then i cannot seem to access either the webgui or the management system at all, ive tried to ssh back in but all the ports seem shut, mosh found a port at number 22 but it didnt seem to do owt. ive tried resetting to put the thing back to factory settings but i simply cant get the gui back up no matter what ip address i use (all the youtubers seem to have a different one, seemingly to do with the region from which they hail). i thought the tftpd thing was gonna work, cos about the only thing i can consistently do is get the orange light to come on by holding reset for 5 secs while it boots up, but then there arent any logfiles in thre server thing to tell me what to name the firmware as. the only success besides the orange light was getting my cable modems router element to come back on so the kids would stop whinging about "why did i break the internet" like im some sort of dipshit who deliberately broke the bastard thing.
if anyone can point me in the direction of some diagnostics to try tomorrow (my head is pounding from this rn and as i say, didnt sleep last night fiddling about with it) id be most ppreciative. it is as if i have shut myself out of the management system somehow. alternatively, if anyone can say to me i'll never be able to have an outbound vpn on this device just say that so i can bin it and move on that wiukd be grand. i did see what looked like some git scripts in another post but i dont know how to make thenm into a program that i can pioibt at the bastard router. gonna have a beer nd chill for the last hour of my ferris beuhler 
sorry if i sound grumpy, i know whatever it is is my fault. just annoyed with mysekf really. not really a techie but like to have a bash at things anyway, in the past month ive trashed my pc os trying to upgrade to qubes, my laptop os, all tghree of my mobiles trying to root them, well two of them the other got spyware and needed to be reset. and now ive just spent a day fecking about with my brnd new router, i even reinstalled windows on drive in case that would help with my netwrork cable config (it didnt)!
