AX AP Recomendations

looking for a current small profile device that i can flash with openwrt and have good/great wifi coverage for a 1500 sqft typical construction house, it will be centrally located and elevated, i would like it to be a small device, that supports openwrt well.

would like it to be capable of gig speeds.

i see recomendations to the WAX series, are they still relevant? not a fan of the look, was hoping for somthing like a ceiling AP

The Zyxel NWAX50 (PRO version ) looks like it has some (and more ) of the features you might be looking for. Ceiling mountable, POE, coverage. Best of all, according to the device wiki it can be flashed to OpenWRT directly from the OEM WebUI.

I've never personally used this, but here is a recommendation by @bmork from another forum post.

Vendor spec page:

Here is the wiki page:

where are you located ?

in EU and UK the WSM20 is cheap, esp if you buy a multi pack.

In US you can easily get your hands on an RT3200 on eBay for $45.

those aren't ceiling APs though.

I've had the AX1800 (non-PRO version) in my cart on amazon for like 6-7 months, just waiting for a reason to actually buy one (like I need yet another radio bathing us in the soothing waves of WiFi).

The differences I can make out between the two are slim, so the $15 is probably well spent:

  • Street price: US$70 vs $85
  • Backhaul: 1GbE vs 2.5GbE
  • 5GHz: 2x2 vs 3x3

I would update that recommendation to U6+ now. Same price and size as the U6 lite, but more modern and powerful.

Agree, depending on whether you favor a square or round design, I would also look at these
Ubiquiti U6+ https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/ubiquiti/ubiquiti_unifi_6_plus
Zyxel NWA50AX PRO
(the Zyxel has slightly better specs)
