Why is my kernel looking for firmware-6.bin? According to kvalo/ath10k-firmware we are still on firmware-5.

Correct, but some (other) wlan chipsets based on ath10k use firmware ABI 6 instead - so the kernel module looks for that file first, regardless of the actual chipset generation. This might be misleading, but is o.k. and working as intended.
