at least now you won't have to chase your own tail, trying to get wifi to work on x86
I do have to say though that I already did a bit of testing on a x86 machine, since I am using a miniPC cube (xeon2176, 64GB ECC RAM) as home server and that machine has a cheapo WiFi card installed I have no use for. I am using a openWRT container for the internal routing for my VMs, VPN, Wireguard, PBR, etc.
I was able to set up a 2.4 GHz AP which was working fine at that time.
But after reading the examples you provided, I see the issues that arise when one wants to use a device like that as a primary router.
Routers just have become so expensive the past 2-3 years here in europe, it is really hard to find something reasonable below 150€.
you need to read the forum some more - https://wifilinks.nl/products/zyxel-t-56-modem-dual-band-wireless-ax6000-ethernet-iad
As frollic already implied, my observation has been that decent to very good routers have become a little cheaper in recent years.
When I needed a new router in 2017, the choice was between r7800, nbg6817 (which is what I went with) or wrt3200acm, prices ranging between 150-180 EUR.
Today, the gl-mt6000 sells for 150 EUR regularly but is rather often on sale around 115 EUR. The t-56 comes out at ~65 EUR delivered, the rt3200 or dl-wrx were around 70 EUR and there are quite decent entry level ones even cheaper.
Yes, getting a market overview can be difficult, certainly overwhelming. Good offers are often rather regional (and short lived) - and on principle on the other side of the big pond (or channel, these days, which kills it from a customs/ shipping cost point of view), but you can still find them (and the used markets are also worth looking at).
Again guys, I am really sorry for derailing this post but at least the info here should be useful for anyone else who has this crappy Asus router and wants to replace it ^^
Thank you very much again @frollic and @slh I really appreciate the help!
