Yes indeed. My actual question is what popular models are supported by openwrt. But I'm pretty sure that stat is not available. But I could correlate it myself.

Just that a router has been popular in the past doesn't mean it's still available new - nor that it would be a good idea to buy today (new or used). E.g. for many years devices with only 32 MB RAM were common and among the most used ones, while you really don't want to buy them today.
Likewise there is a very popular and still good device still for sale, but it's actually more expensive than its much newer and faster modern competition (and even the prices for used specimens is rather high).

If you want to roughly estimate which routers are most popular in the world you can check most popular routers on Amazon. This is very differs in other countries, especially in China.
So you can check local internet shops. For example for Ukraine on most popular shop https://rozetka.com.ua/routers/c80193/sort=popularity/
I would be careful with this result, as it is clearly an outlier. It's not yet clear why this device gets such exorbitantly high download numbers.
