Archer C7 v4 5Ghz slow

Hello everyone!

I have recently installed OpenWrt on my tp-link archer C7 AC1750 v4.0 EU. Before that, I had approx. 400Mb/s on 5gHz via WiFi (I should get 1Gbit/s on ethernet, accessed with PPPoE). Now it's like 140Mb/s... What have I done wrong?
I really appreciate any help.

Below is my config:

  • Using 2015 MacBook pro
  • OpenWrt release: 18.06.2

Thank you very much!

It's a bit unclear what exactly this observed problem is.

  • do you use the Archer c7-v4 effectively as AP and only get ~140 MBit/s throughput from an internal system in your LAN to a connected WLAN client (it should be faster than this, depending on the connecting client)?
  • is your WAN throughput limited to roughly ~140 MBit/s, regardless of wired or WLAN access (this is within the expected range of the hardware capabilities and not 'fixable')?

In general, the Archer C7-v4 is based on the single core ar71xx/ ath79 QCA9563 SOC running at 750 MHz, I wouldn't expect that SOC to cope with more than ~140-150 MBit/s routing performance. Yes, the OEM firmware may be a little faster relying on proprietary acceleration methods (SFE or hardware NAT), OpenWrt (with kernel >=4.14) might also have a little speedup in stock after enabling software flow-offloading, but no ar71xx/ ath79 device will cope with routing at 1 GBit/s line speed - you need considerably faster hardware (e.g. mvebu or x86_64) for that.

I will try to lighten you up about the problem, but because I am kinda newbie in the topic I suppose it won't be easy

So I use the router as it often used for an average person. (AP I suggest..). I get an ethernet-out from my isp, which I plugged in the router. To connect to the internet, I set up the PPPoE connection.
When I connect my computer to the 5Ghz WiFi network, the results are the mentioned.
With wired access to the router, I get an average of 180 Mb/s. I should test this without the router.. (plugged the isp's ethernet cable directly to the computer, and setting the PPPoE in the os)
I think somewhere the router bottleneck the speed...
I don't expect the 1GBit/s, but at least 5-600Mb/s via WLAN... Is it possible?

O.k., so you are testing the routing performance from WAN, including PPPoE, NAT, routing and firewalling, your results are:

  • ~140 MBit/s for WAN (PPPoE) <--> WLAN tests
  • ~180 MBit/s for WAN (PPPoE) <--> (wired) LAN tests

That is within the expectable performance limits of your hardware (a bit higher than I would have guesstimated, but latency is probably already maxed out), you can confirm that by connecting to your router via ssh and running top, you will hit (around) "0% idle" during your tests under full load. It is also not surprising that you won't get maximum WAN-to-WLAN throughput under full load, as WLAN traffic adds to the router's general CPU load (servicing IRQs), thereby slightly lowering the throughput compared to wired access.

The only way to (slightly) improve these figures is by enabling software flow-offloading, which needs at least kernel 4.14 to work (master snapshots (both ath79 and ar71xx) ship with kernel 4.14, the 18.06.2 release images -which come with kernel 4.9- don't), but I wouldn't expect too much from this either (certainly not 1 GBit/s, most likely not 500 MBit/s, more like ~15-25% on a good day, with traffic patterns that can offloaded well (SQM, VPN etc. can't)).

As mentioned before, your hardware simply can't deal with these throughputs, you need considerably faster hardware (e.g. mvebu or x86_64) to achieve routing at 1 GBit/s line speed.

First, you're unlikely to get more than 100-150 Mbps over 802.11ac for a single-stream client on an 40 MHz channel, and no more than roughly twice that if you can even run an 80 MHz channel.

My experience with Archer C7v2 units, which probably applies to any ~700 MHz MIPS-based unit with two Ethernet interfaces is that the CPU caps out around 400 Mbps just for routing. No PPPoE, no NAT, no SQM, no LuCI, no application software.

For security purposes, you probably should set wpa2+ccmp rather than allowing the weaker encryption.

Disabling legacy rates may help some as well.

As seen in the config the 5Ghz 'radio0' is on 80Hz so it should be able to send 200-300 Mb/s as you mentioned. But it does not.
The problem is, why. It's because I am not using flow-offloading?

I'll set the security, ty!

To be clear, are you talking about the on-air bandwidth, or actual observed speed?

Even if it is set to enable 80 MHz channels, the spec has the radios "fall back" to 40, or even 20 MHz if the channels involved are occupied.

The output of iw dev <some wlan> station dump will show you what is actually being used. Take half or three-quarters of the modulation rate for a guess at the throughput. Remember that it is aggregate over all links on the same radio, either on the same SSID or different, and that every additional SSID on the same radio has "beacons" that chew up available airtime as well.

Edit:

require_mode 'ac' may also help, if all of your devices will still connect. I can't use that myself as the iPhone 5 doesn't support 802.11ac.

lleachii:
The actual observed speed is 140-150Mb/s on 5Ghz WiFi. As jeff mentioned, it should be approx 300Mb/s w/ 80Hz

Ch. 116 may also be impacted by DFS, which will cause the radio to either narrow its bandwidth, or change its channel.

What should I put int the place of 'some wlan'? radio0 doesn't work, neither the ssid

The "station" which you can find with iw dev

Something probably like wlan0-1

Consistent with a couple hundred mbps throughput

I will try flow-offloading but if it doesn't work, or at least I can't make it work, I will eventually revert the firmware to the stock. I read that you really don't like when someone calling a retreat, but the numbers are on the stock firmware's side.

I can't blame you for wanting higher performance, but I wouldn't trade it for security.

TP-Link, in my opinion, has a terrible record of back doors and security flaws that are never patched. That they are generally running a kernel that is out of support means that they will likely never be patched.
