Alfa R36A (H) Compatibility Advice

Hi.

I have an Alfa R36A in my caravan as a Wifi Extender using a USB Wifi - Alfa Tube-U(N). Its was bought as part of this kit: Camp Pro - 2

I'm looking to add 4G LTE data capability using a similar Tube Modem device.

This one is compatible with my router, but I don't seem to be able to buy one anywhere (Cat 3 LTE) Tube-U4G (Although despite the second application scenario Alfa suggest my router isn't supported - go figure)

The v2 of this is available to buy (Cat 4 LTE) Tube-U4Gv2

However the v2 claims to be only supported by the R36AH. Other than onboard Ram, I can't actually work out what the difference is between these 2 routers. From what I can gather both the routers have the same USB port specs (possibly with the exception of USB power, but I can't find any data on that)

I haven't flashed my R36A to generic OpenWrt yet, but it might well be a project in a week or so when I'm away in the caravan.

Does anyone know or have any experience.

  1. Is the OpenWrt R36A firmware be the same firmware I would need for the R36AH?
  2. Would an R36A flashed with the latest OpenWrt have any restrictions as to the USB LTE modem connectivity for a Cat 4 LTE modem, not withstanding USB power requirements.
  3. The option for a cheap-ish OpenWrt router to replace the R36A that would allow me to make use of both the outdoor Tube-U(N) Wifi receiver and either the Tube-U4Gv2 or another external USB type LTE Cat 4 Modem with aerial (or indoor modem with external aerial).

Thanks in advance.
