Hi All,
I'm a complete newb with OpenWrt, and I'm going to try solving a problem with it!
My background is 1st/2nd line tech support. and I have about 20 years doing all sorts of tech support including quite a bit of UNIX and Linux as well as well as the usual Wintel stuff.
The problem is that I'm the Chairman of my local RC Car Racing Club. Our track is in a rural area with no nearby Broadband, patchy cell data availability, and not much funding to speak of.
So far, the club has been very analogue in the way it works. with Timing and results published on a paper scoreboard. but racers are expecting more and more to have wifi internet on their phones and get results digitally.
I have half the solution in place already, I got a Chinese Router/Switch with built in 4/5g, and with an antenna array, I'm now getting good enough cell data to one end of site. But the pit/paddock end of site is still a dark spot. So i've picked up an Aerohive AP350 for next to nothing off a popular auction site. I intend running a long Ethernet cable on a POE cable down there from my router and Using the AP350 to provide some WiFi down there.
Obviously, it's going to be very hard to set up the new SSIDs and configuration in it's current form, so I intend flashing it with OpenWrt. I presume that to do this, I'm going to have to flash the new firmware in via the RJ45 COM port? Begging the question, is this the cable I need to do the job? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Console-Routers-Switches-Connection-Support/dp/B0DGP2JGJN/ref=sr_1_3?adgrpid=52848123813&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.kDrgPWuOm3MMBvMRtBeeOcYN8oyc8y8fhszGnj82ciXRAXTmm50DIZiCsqxlBRbJdFQLSEkpjctVJ37PDFhH__Su2oHmr58_cNS8Nk9jSdfvxm1tMMYnVB6bbJryOALJ2mhaZg0i9l-rZ8uSDaIAD-0q6VvqraPqKIGohB7H7UaAyFh5VoQquNTfXqN8-Clbs8EWxbbxFxymMhOEYawA6uGq3jhlYQJquU6RRs5Fryo.DF4ChUYApGnNKLa6rlOUm-fxYxJDtspIR77Quhu6wXQ&dib_tag=se&gad_source=1&hvadid=259083459983&hvdev=c&hvexpln=0&hvlocphy=9219194&hvnetw=g&hvocijid=12647939366159578678--&hvqmt=e&hvrand=12647939366159578678&hvtargid=kwd-300681358445&hydadcr=28148_1821044&keywords=console+cable&mcid=421639ffe842335c81a6d54ecfe87964&qid=1746729453&sr=8-3
