Adding wireless access point feature to an old modem

I have an old DSL modem with UART and SPI access to the flash chip. I want to add a wireless access point feature (with only the power cable inserted, no Ethernet cable to the main modem). How can I do this? I don't have any source code, just the stock firmware dumped from the modem. Can I compile iwd or maybe NetworkManager and insert them into the modem's root filesystem? Kernel ver: 2.6

What is the device in question? Is it supported by OpenWrt?

In that case, there's nothing that OpenWrt can do for you here. You can ask on more general forums (or ones dedicated to your device) where people may be making such modifications. But we cannot help you with your task on a device that isn't supported by OpenWrt.
