Adding support for EAP235-WALL

I can get serial setup, so that is no problem.

How far is the image, besides that you can't flash from web interface?

LAN ports working and switchports?
WIFI working (2.4ghz/5ghz)?
vlans, on switchports? vlans with wifi?
POE passtrough?

I can test all these features , so if you want please build an image.

As I gathered from @svanheule (please correct me if I'm wrong!):

  • LAN and switch are working, but only after you tftpbooted (so over serial). LAN won't initialise somehow on installed images without that. So you need serial to be able to test.
  • WiFi scanning works for both radios, I don't think actual connections have been tested yet.
  • VLANs: no idea. MT7621 is a broadly deployed and tested platform though so I'm not expecting any issues with that.
  • PoE passthrough: no idea.

You can find the images here in a few minutes.

@Borromini nicely summed up what's working and what isn't (thanks!)

I've pushed an additional commit to export the PoE passthrough enable GPIO, so you can use it in scripts or permanently enable with uci.

TP-Link's GPIO config file also has definitions related to the watchdog. I haven't done anything special with them, and the AP doesn't appear to spontaneously reboot, so that's probably fine.

;proc_name type active init gpio
;==========================================
wdt_feed wdt low high 4
wdt_disable wdt low high 3

I'm currently waiting for TP-Link to upload the GPL archive, so I can have a look at how they handle bringing up the switch.

@Borromini thnx, I"m gonna try, is the snapshot you made already with POE passtrough?

No give me a few minutes building that one, and you'll need the initramfs image to tftpboot as well, that's not there for now either. Stay tuned.

@kroon040 New images have been uploaded, please note these builds will all self-configure to 10.0.0.254! Images contain LuCI.

@gashalot Could you give these a spin as well to see if they work on your EAP235-Wall? The ones I ordered specifically have (EU) printed on the back, so might be good to know if there's any hardware differences (or different compatibility checks) warranting a split-up in EU/US versions like other hardware.

Thnx @borromini,

So I need than first tftpboot the

openwrt-ramips-mt7621-tplink_eap235-wall-v1-initramfs-kernel.bin

and than scp the openwrt-ramips-mt7621-tplink_eap235-wall-v1-squashfs-factory.bin, or do I combine these with tftp?

And than scp the sysupgrade image and sysupgrade this image

You need to read the installation instructions as per the git commit. From what I understood you don't need the initramfs to install the factory image (you can do that through the web UI as per the instructions in the commit) but you will need the initramfs image to get the Ethernet going.

You should normally be able to write a sysupgrade image to flash from the initramfs, but I'm not sure if that's what @svanheule meant when he said you need to tftpboot to get the Ethernet ports working.

Hopefully he can clarify.

When you run tftpboot in the u-boot console, the bootloader will first initialise the internal switch, and then try to load the requested file.

On an uninterrupted boot, the bootloader does not initialise the switch. This means the OS still needs to do that, which currently isn't happening yet.

OK these are the steps

  • SSH into the target device
  • run cliclientd stopcs, this should return "success"
  • upload the factory image via the web-interface
  • Interrupt bootloader by holding '4' during boot, which drops the
    bootloader into its shell
  • Change default 'serverip' and 'ipaddr' variables (optional)
  • Download initramfs with tftpboot, and boot image with bootm
    # tftpboot 84000000 openwrt-initramfs.bin
    # bootm

Do a sysupgrade, and with every reboot tftpboot is needed for the initramfs.bin

well, I got a bit working, booting form initramfs, the image is ofcourse readonly...

I noticed that there was only 1 radio 2.4ghz, on the image no 5ghz radio?

That sounds like what you get when you forget to include the packages for the 5GHz radio. @Borromini, did you include the required packages in your build?

  • kmod-mt7603
  • kmod-mt7615e
  • kmod-mt7663-firmware-ap

My bad! I'm using PER_DEVICE_ROOTFS and not all my MT7621 devices have the same hardware, so those packages were modular...

New build on the way.

New images are up, necessary packages included.

@svanheule Seems there's other TP-Link MT7621 devices suffering from similar PHY initialisation issues:

No solution offered there but thought I'd mention it.

This location I took the packages

https://volatilesystems.org/dl/lede/targets/eap235-wall/

did an sysupgrade en placed the new initramfs file in tftplocation, but still only 2.4ghz

dmesg shows this time, and should be correct I think

@kroon040 Can you checksum the image you tried and see if it matches these?

https://volatilesystems.org/dl/lede/targets/eap235-wall/images_wip/

Those should have the mt7615e driver and mt7663 firmware.

I'm seeing two radios on my build:

@kroon040 Can you post the output of this command:

# opkg list-installed|grep mt76

Edit: sorry for the teething problems guys. kmod-mt7615e doesn't auto-select kmod-mt7663-firmware-ap so I had to add that explicitly to DEVICE_PACKAGES. New images are up.

@Borromini , now I have no wireless at all, also no menu entry

root@OpenWrt:/etc/init.d# opkg list-installed|grep mt76
gives nothing
