Adding OpenWrt support for Zyxel EX5601-T0

Thanks for all the replies. Your are totally correct. I should have read up on the subject a bit more before starting. I nie Knorr that openwrt has wifi disabled at first which is a good sign because I thought I bricked another router haha. I will go over to a friends house to use his laptop quickly to turn on wifi.

You're overthinking this, but walking is good exercise, so we won't try to talk you out of it ,)

My Zyxel t56 is up and running and it runs like a charm
Now i will read up on how to get the custom mod on it to get full storage capacity available. After that, all that remains is to play around with all the goodies provided in the software setion.

Is there any way to flash these ubootmod files without needing the serial console and just doing it through SSH? Anything to bypass the need to remove the back cover and get into the serial pins?

Yes is possible, follow wiki, multiple methods are described there

So as of now, are all of the original FW versions, supported by OpenWrt?

If i buy from https://wifilinks.nl/products/zyxel-t-56-modem-dual-band-wireless-ax6000-ethernet-iad, can I install OpenWrt?

PS: I bought 2 Zyxel from them in the past, but it was a while a go.

unless there's a new firmware out, you should be.
nice to see the T-56s being available again.

Yea, the main purpose of my replay, was to make people aware;) however let’s not forget that on this website the same router was 20 Euro…Good thing is that they ship in other countries

Question about upgrading. Thanks to this thread, I was able to install Zyxel EX5601-T0 ubootmod on OpenWrt 24.10.0-rc5. It’s running fine so maybe I shouldn’t touch it, but I was wondering if anyone has tried an upgrade path to 24.10.3 for instance, and what benefit it brought. (if any)

you should, it's a pre-release.

from RC5 straight to latest stable - https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org/?target=mediatek%2Ffilogic&id=zyxel_ex5601-t0-ubootmod

it works, too ?

Thanks frollic, upgraded from RC5 to 24.10.3 via sysupgrade and it was completely painless—was worried about the ubootmod but no issues at all!

Hi @carlicious , thanks for posting the recipe, unfortunately it does not work with the firmware version ā€œV5.70(ACDZ.3.2)C0ā€ that is on my UK 5601-T0. When I replace the app. js contents and press F5, I see the sub menu headings under ā€˜maintenance’ but none of the sub menus have any contents so I can’t enable SSH etc. I’m guessing that the menu structure is somehow different, but I’m not sure what? Any thoughts, much appreciated.

Just an idea, did you try another browser?

Use serial ?

Perhaps you cannot even see the menus because several options have been blocked out on purpose by the ISP.

The gold standard is to proceed with Serial flashing which does not require supervisor passwords etc.

The thing is that when I replace app.js, there are no menu contents at all, just the menu headings. Even the menus that are there normally no longer show. I forgot to say that I am using Firefox, with Linux Mint. Perhaps it’s a Windows / Linux issue?

Just a thought, I’ve been connecting via WiFi, should I be using a wired (Ethernet) connection?

The install method which modifies the hidden properties in the web interface works on the Odido supplied T56 however there is no guarantee that it works on other EX5601 versions from different ISPs. You can open the device and hook up serial connection to check the boot log to see if you can use mtk_uartboot or if it has been locked down.

I just noticed this now, nice work!

I didn’t have a lot of time for this anymore so I’m glad you found a solution.

My mind was really stuck on how to disable secure boot.

Thanks for saving me from a headache

Now that we know that secure boot is not enabled, it makes everything so much easier.

I know a simpler way to give admin account more access. I’ll post it soon.

That would be really helpful! Thanks.

I think we should hold our cards up instead of opening them all. If the current method works why exposure more
