Adding OpenWrt support for Xiaomi "Redmi Router AX6S"/"Xiaomi Router AX3200"

I can recommend install luci-app-attendedsysupgrade to upgrade to latest Snapshot and keep all settings and packages, very smooth!

Got the RB01 (international) unit with production date 09/2021 and telnet was enabled. As other users reported, it seems that 10/2021 is the split point between having and not having telnet enabled. I haven't found that anyone reported disabled telnet on units with production dates 08/2021 and 09/2021 on the RB01 version. Note however that this is not verifiable info since we don't have the full data - there may be early production units with telnet disabled.

The production date is printed bellow the barcode on the box, so ask your retailer about it if you plan to get an AX3200.

Same as @andiradulescu I have followed the instructions by @mikeeq (mikeeq/xiaomi_ax3200_openwrt) and used the latest factory snapshot from https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/22.03-SNAPSHOT/targets/mediatek/mt7622/.

Everything working smooth for now. Thanks to everyone who contributed in any way and form.

How long did the very first boot of OpenWrt (after mtd write -r factory.bin firmware) of your RB01 take?

For my device: it's infinite.

I'm trying with the latest SNAPSHOT, currently r19442-81da8a295b.
Am I missing something?

Luci do not have switch menu entry in this device/image. Do I need to install something or enable via uci ?

EDITED: see @namidairo answer below.

In my experience it was quite fast. Something might have gone wrong with your flashing. Power cycling the device does boot stock firmware? If not you may need to start a recovery process (there are some instructions here).

Sounds like they are looking for the old swconfig page.

Read this instead: https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/dsa/dsa-mini-tutorial

@dsouza I am talking about Network-->Switch menu entry, those one with vlans

@namidairo thx, this is new way of dealing with vlans right ?

Why does anyone roll the dice by ordering an international version (AX3200, RB01) that may have telnet disabled, when they could just order the Chinese version (AX6S, RB03) and use the beta firmware to guarantee that telnet is enabled? Am I missing something?

well for me I did order 2 AX6S from Aliexpress, which I'm still waiting for, one day before that I sent a question to local retailer about the AX3200 production date, the day after I ordered the AX6S they answered they had 3 in stock all of them 09/2021 date, all of who bought AX3200 with 09/2021 had Telnet enabled, so I took a chance and bought 2 AX3200 which came within 2 days, €10 cheaper, better warranty support, no need to use EU adapter, luckily Aliexpress have free return but hopefully I can sell them to someone who wants guaranteed Telnet enabled and don't want to wait couple of weeks for delivery.

@mlis , maybe because the international (AX3200, RB01) version is widely available in the local offline stores in EU, and customers can check the device's production date on the box before purchase.
p.s> Yesterday I bought 1 RB01 model with production date 08/2021: {"telnet":true,"init":false,..."ssh":false,"version":"1.0.35","facmode":false,"4kblock":false,"secboot":false,...,"uart":false}

Thanks Alex and Gilgamesh. This makes a lot of sense. I’m in North America, so I’ll have to import regardless. Sounds like the RB03 is my best bet.

anyone here using SQM? if yes what recommended settings? I have 250/250 now but will get 1000/1000 soon. thanks

I'll retry with another SNAPSHOT and with the 22.03-SNAPSHOT.
It would be nice if anyone with serial access could try recent snapshots.

I don't have any clue what is going on.

  • telnet is enabled (manufactured: 2021/9)
  • freshly flashed OpenWrt booted and entered and left the failsafe mode (orange LED blinking faster)
  • OpenWrt failsafe was unusable: device wasn't reachable at 192.168.1.1
  • slow blinking orange LED never ended
  • TFTP recovery with signed official firmware successed
  • telnet access kept enabled after recovery

It boots now! OpenWrt SNAPSHOT, r19482-c0a6fefd9b

Sorry for the noise.

To me, initially, I want to order RB01 (production date:08/2021 link here because I bought 1 back in late Feb 2022. Not very long ago.
Now the seller is selling 10 bucks discount. This is ready stock available locally, so roughly about 3-4 days, I will receive it

2nd reason is RB03 version, the seller is shipping out from China, it will take about 2 weeks to
reach my home and it cost roughly 30 bucks more expensive.

But at the end, I went to buy the RB03 since there is a way to circumvent the Telnet disabled problem. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi guys,

So far are there bugs encountered? Just want to be ready to face the challenges.

I have not noticed anything yet, except the 100Mbps ethernet upload bug, but that does not effect me at all so I don't care, I run all my devices on WiFi.

Any tips how to replace already installed @mikeeq's version with official release?

here you have the official Snapshots, I guess sysupgrade should be fine? then install Luci-app-attendedsysupgrade so you can update to latest Snapshot easy and keep all settings and packages.
