I used the OpenWrt install image for the WRTNODE, and the installation worked, though something wonky happened in the functionality. I will post again with more details.

Are there any diagnostic / test suites I can run on the device now that it's running OpenWrt 18.06.4? There seemed to be something malfunctioning with routing last week, but now in a new place I haven't yet recreated the error.

What doesn't work: I disable DHCP server for the lan interface (both IPv4 and IPv6), which should make the device function as a switch (this works on a TP-Link WDR3500 running OpenWrt), but it doesn't work.

Can you you explain in detail how you did the install, i'm new to this.

  1. Download firmware. I'm using the most recent firmware, 19.07rc2, which you can download for the WRTnode here or look for other details and versions on the WRTnode device page.
  2. Rename the downloaded file to something shorter, like openwrt-1907rc2-WRTnode.bin
  3. Connect to the WiTek router via cable. If you cannot connect via cable, don't do this upgrade, because the default OpenWrt installation has WiFi disabled, which means that without a cable to login and enable wifi, your router will be useless after flashing.
  4. Using the menu along the top of the page, go to System > Backup / Flash Firmware.
  5. Use the last section on that page to choose the firmware file, disable "keep settings", and go ahead and flash the firmware.
  6. Wait a little while.
  7. Once the router has flashed and rebooted, it will connect to your computer again.
  8. Go to 192.168.1.1, log in, and configure as you desire (such as enabling wifi).
