Adding OpenWrt support for Linksys E5600

My e5600 automatically rebooted from snapshot build to the stock firmware. It then updated to easymesh update 1.0.1.152 without any intervention. Now all attempts to upload the OpenWRT fail with both partition. Looks like I need to reopen the box for Serial port access :frowning: .

I don't seem to have any problem with the 5G radio, with the STA firmware included. Can you try the images from here: https://foo.true.cz/minio/openwrt/staging-builds/testing-mt7621-21-02-rc2-backports/2c462a29/ramips-mt7621/bin/targets/ramips/mt7621/

These are images built by @ynezz for testing before backporting to 21.02. I have just installed this image, and I have no problems running the 5G radio in both Client-WDS & Master mode. But there was one thing weird, even though I used "sysupgrade" image, it erased my existing cinfigurations.

I recommend trying a fresh factory image installation.

No you don't. Follow this.

  1. Flash once to stock to make sure no partition has openwrt.
2 . Reset to factory using reset button for 30 seconds.
  2. Dont change any settings. Turn off and on using power switch / power supply.
  3. Then flash the booted stock partition with stock firmware. This should boot into alt_firmware.
  4. Then flash openwrt when it reboots. On successful flash it will flash the power LED rapidly. If unsuccessful it will boot into alt_firmware instead after few reboots. If this happens follow steps 1-5 again.

Note: If unable to boot to stock, when you power on the router press wps button once. This will turn both power and internet LEDs amber and boot into alt_firmware.

I don't mind erasing existing configuration. I will try this build with sysupgrade later.

And, we're officially into 21.02!

Just need to wait until the next release candidate now

Congrats!
I shall push for Archer c6 as well!

Thanks @ct25 . I found it easier with the serial cable!

Please post instructions for recovery via serial port. I'm sure they'll be useful to one of us some day.

it seems i bricked the router by flashing the image found here https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/e5600

Is it possible that you flashed to the wrong partition, or the wrong image file? This router is hard to brick because of the dual boot behavior.

Power down the router, wait 30secs, power it up, and press the "WPS" button as soon as the power LED lights up. This should turn "power" and "internet" LEDs to amber color. The device might then boot successfully if its other partition is safe.

At this point, flash your stock firmware twice in succession - to remove any traces of OpenWrt. Then, start-over again.

can you give me the link of currently working flash file of openwrt ?

https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/targets/ramips/mt7621/

if you can manage to install luci on a snapshot I would say try the snapshot.

@digislayer So I am on the latest snapshot as of this comment (5.4.124 kernel) and the 5G radio seems to work now. I don't know what the problem was previously but I flashed to stock a few times hard reset it and now flashed to snapshot. Let RC3 include a build for this and ill test that one.

Is anyone else having WiFi issues on stock? My connection gets disconnected frequently on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. Will this issue be fixed if I flash OpenWrt?

After flashing 21.02 RC3, the LAN ports of my router seems to be disabled. I am able to see e5600 logging into my other router via the WAN port but the LAN ports seems to have been disabled. Even flashing the older snapshot LAN ports are disabled and there is no way to ssh into the router.
I will try to enable the wifi in the build image and flash to see if BR-LAN is disabled.

Edit: In my host kern log I found autoneg failing. Reduced the LAN speed to 10 Mbps and the link was connected. Replaced the cat5e test cable with cat6 and was back to 1Gbps. Not sure if it the hardware issue or software as the same MT7621 is working correctly on Archer C6.

So its not just me then. The latest stock adds EasyMesh and it constantly disconnects my clients (iOS at least). So its likely that they messed up. This doesn't happen on the snapshot build however. So I am guessing it is likely a problem with the stock firmware.

So hopefully it's not a hardware issue otherwise even I was thinking of applying for a replacement. I'll try with OpenWrt when 21.02 is released. Thanks!

The 21.02 RC3 includes support for E5600 ... The main branch is actually really stable imo for E5600 but compared to stock it doesn't perform as well (normal). I can get around 450mbps maybe or sometimes even bursts of 500mbps on 5G on stock compared to 350Mbps or around 300Mbps on main branch which is much lower but probably the class this device falls in anyway. I would say this device can be perfectly fine for SQM for upto 150mbps (you cant do wireless more than that realistically in another room with this) and a great WiFi device for a 100/100 connection. Beyond that maybe you want something more powerful.

I have a 50Mbps connection so I don't care about performance too much. I just don't want random disconnections and ping spikes.

The latest snapshot r16966-940c196be1 is giving me a consistent 450Mbps+ download and 500Mbps+ upload from an OpenSpeedTest server hosted locally on 1Gbps LAN.

I have gone through this entire thread. Am I right that everything basic works out of the box with the latest RC3 release? I mean both 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio. Can this be updated via stock firmware's update firmware window?
