Thanks for advices. Community help is great.

Why am I able to ping www.doubleclick.net from my PC, but not from the router? I did ipconfig /flushdns, but I'm still able to ping it. I've setup a VPN on my router - can that be the cause? But then why isn't the router able to ping it?

Doublecheck that your client PC is using your local (adblock enabled) resolver.

Just a small heads up regarding browser based DNS over HTTPS (DoH), which will be enabled by default in firefox by end of month (for details look here).

With the switch to DoH there will be also a canary DoH "opt-out" domain available, to signal firefox that the local network is unsuitable for DoH. Therefore please add the domain use-application-dns.net to your local blacklist ... nothing more is needed by now to disable DoH network wide (for details look here).

Just note: Currently this is WIP, there is no DoH "opt-out" standard defined, yet ... also it's unclear if/when google chromium will enable DoH by default and use this "opt-out" approach, too.

How do I check that?

I recently setup my router as an access point using this guide:

https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wifi/dumbap

Everything works perfectly, but I can't seem to setup adblocker on it. Can anyone give me a step by step guide of how to fix it ? I am very new to OpenWrt

Windows? If so, type ipconfig /all and check the DNS-Server entries, only your adblock enabled DNS-Server should be listed.

Dumb AP is not supported, you need a dns server on your router. See online doc regarding requirements (referenced in the first post)

Hi guys,

I started experiencing a strange behavior on my phone for the past couple of days.
When I try to download or update an app on my Android phone via Google play it does not start downloading. When i disable the adblock on the router it works fine. I googled some domains that are used by google for the play store (play.google.com, play.googleapis.com) but none of those are blocked.

Has anyone experienced any similar issues or maybe give a more specific list of domains that are used by the play store to check if any of the are blocked?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot. That fixed it!

There are 2 entries: an IP4 and IP6 address. The IP4 belongs to my VPN provider - it's their DNS server and my router is setup to route traffic through their VPN - so is that the correct setup? Or should the DNS-Server entries list the router's own address?

The PC seems to be setup to use router's DNS and the router cannot ping www.doubleclick.com, yet the PC can. I've tried ipconfig /flushdns then ipconfig /displaydns displays no entry for www.doubleclick.com, yet when I ping it - the PC pings it. I don't understand.

UPDATE: I've tried to manually add www.doubleclick.com to adblock/advanced/blacklist and everything works as expected with it - it gets blocked both on the router and the PC.

UPDATE 2: I've removed www.doubleclick.com from adblock/advanced/blacklist clicked Refresh Blocklist Sources and it seems to be working properly now?! I suppose clicking Refresh solved the problem?!

Hey,

After couple of months running ok I just did a sysupgrade to the latest master on my R7800.

Now the Adblock does not start with following logs;
Fri Sep 20 21:46:19 2019 user.info adblock-3.8.6[4682]: your adblock config seems to be too old, please update your config with the '--force-maintainer' opkg option.

Note that I never do any upgrades using Luci or using ssh/monitor opkg commands but always compiling new FW (after make clean) and do the sysupgrade.

So how to get old obsolete config cleared/replaced with new when compiling new FW and doing sysupgrade?

I've setup my router to use VPN via Wireguard. When I enable AdBlock I start leaking DNS requests - any idea why?

Hi!

i'm new to OpenWRT and i tried installing Adblock via Luci. but when i check the Adblock luci page and check the runtime everything on the info page says n/a attaching image below for reference. I tried installed Simple Adblock and that is working. i'm i missing any deficiencies??

What does this mean in detail? Either you use the DNS server of the VPN provider (higher anonymity) or the local DNS server of the router (with adblock).

To replace your old config, just re-install the package like the log message stated. If you're able to compile a new firmware you should be able to call opkg as well ...:slightly_smiling_face:

Did you enable the service via System => Startup in Luci? And please don't mix/test both adblock variants at the same time ...
