Access Point / Default Gateway

I have a Linksys EA8300 serving as an access point for three networks (lan, iot and guest). I want to give it a static address, so I provide it with the following:

network.lan=interface
network.lan.device='br-lan'
network.lan.proto='static'
network.lan.ipaddr='192.168.1.4'
network.lan.netmask='255.255.255.0'
network.lan.gateway='192.168.1.1'
network.lan.dns='192.168.1.1'

I also have network > interfaces > lan (iot, guest) > advanced settings > use default gateway checked for each subnet, but for some reason, I do not see this parameter when I do a uci show network.

I do something similar but use different subnets for the iot and guest.

The access point itself (not devices connected to the access point) often has difficulty reaching the internet.

This is often the result from a ping:

PING openwrt.org (64.226.122.113): 56 data bytes
--- openwrt.org ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

It seems I can fix the problem by changing, and then setting back the network.lan.gateway='192.168.1.1' setting.

I can recreate the problem on the lan subnet by changing the network.iot.gateway='192.168.2.1' setting.

Any thoughts on what I can do to solve this intermittent problem?

iot and guest gateway should be left blank on a dumb AP (they will point to the main router)
restart network (service network restart) after changing or reboot

@ecg, thank you. This solved my problem.
