A new dual 10G router based on Filogic 880 (Banana Pi BPi-R4)

I find AE’s website to be hard to navigate. I’m assuming you’re telling me to go to Sinovoip’s store on AE?

I don’t see a bundle with the R4 8GB RAM. Can you help me find it?

Im not aware of any 8GB RAM version. Note that the eMMC is 8gb

The official shop is this

got mine from there. watchout that 8gb ram wont be , atm at least, supported by openwrt.
you will need to do some manual step to activate the extra memory

Oh? I had no idea OpenWRT doesn't officially support 8GB of RAM. You sure? Why would BPI release it if there is no support? Thanks for letting me know. Maybe I'll opt for the 4GB and call it a day.

Why did you buy it would this seller and no sinovoip?

Wow, am I seeing the proper price? The bundle which includes the BPI R4 4GB, enclosure, antenna, WiFi card, and power supply for C$141? Seems way too good to be true. Am I missing something?

they dont seems to do much than releasing hw...check the latest official version of openwrt on their website: 21.xx.

didnt want to spend much for the same hw
watch out that sometime on aliexpress, you have some missleading photo.
click on each to be sure you see the right price for the actual item.

First of all, the Banana Pi R4 is a router development board :see_no_evil_monkey:.
What are your needs? (SFP? 5G/4G modem?)

Is a development board really something you want to play with?

There is no shielding on the BPI-R4, BPI-BE14, or BE19000. So you have to deal with both shielding and cooling! The cases themselves are heat traps!

-> This is just a small excerpt.

So, what I want to ask is:
Are you maybe just interested in OpenWrt?

I would recommend buying an existing router that already has OpenWrt support. It’s still early for Wi-Fi 7, but there are already “real” Filogic-based routers, like:

  • Adtran SmartRG SDG-8734
  • Not jet: ASUS ZenWiFi BT8
  • Not yet: Quantum Fiber W1700K

It’s also not a shame to buy a good Wi-Fi 6(E) router that is still well-supported — and then upgrade to Wi-Fi 7 in a year or two.

  • Can you wait for “OpenWrt Two”?

How do you add shielding to it?

Shielding doesn't do much actually from our testing

For cooling just take the top metal plate off put a mesh and put a noctua fan on and temperature should be fine, in the summer my cpu and be14 don't go above 50c, I haven't put on pwm tho cause I don't know how to do it on openwrt

As SpectreDev says, as far as we know, it's not necessary — but there are many more issues (noise, EEPROM) with the BE14.
And as you can see, you can't just buy it and expect it to work out of the box!

I think you should read the chats here and on the Banana Pi forums.

So, think carefully about your router choice!

Is the EMI noise and temp really an issue if the WiFi7 isn't on it?

I just ordered one to run as a replacement to my Turris Omnia which is limited to 1Gbps. I have a couple of home servers with offsite backups running periodically. And my ISP can give me a 10Gbps uplink for the same price. The only catch is that it's on me to buy the hardware.

I searched a while and couldn't really find a 10G SFP+ OpenWRT ready device elsewhere...

The BPi R4 seems like what I need, and the kit with case, heatsink & fan & power supply was cheap enough that if I want to replace it later, I won't be upset.

The only known method of improving the noise is to make the PCIE go in power saving mode, and in my experience it makes it alot more usable not perfect but better than before

Here is the link on how to do it

I use my Linksys mx4200 as mesh with DAWN, gets me higher speed in my houses bedrooms

OpenWRT has a table of hardware (TOH):

Deciso DEC740

ASUS RT-AX89X

MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN

But there are much more:

Maybe we can skip the whole shielding topic...

→ But there is one thing I noticed after looking at the BE14 about 50 times:

grafik

And the board design does not support this!
What others do is mount a large shield over the entire package.

I'm not saying that’s it — it just feels like we’re not done with shielding (could be wrong )

For reference: W1700K

Yep also the bpi r4 pro has marking for shields around the separate chips

I think Simon changed his mind about the customers of Banana Pi routers after the shitstorm :upside_down_face:.

It’s good for the future, but bad for the BE14... :downcast_face_with_sweat:

I wonder if someone somehow comes up with a DIY solution of putting separate shields on the be14
