I see openwrt use on my router two images
avm_fritz7490-micron-initramfs-kernel.bin
and
avm_fritz7490-micron-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
for installation I flash first the image initramfs
and then
sysupgrade -n with avm_fritz7490-micron-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
I see for sysupgrade they use only the avm_fritz7490-micron-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin image, it update also the initramfs?
Initramfs is for install only (if needed).

initramfs is meant to netboot oem or otherwise inaccessible device without altering flash memory. Once you run openwrt you only need sysupgrade images.
What is your current ubus call system board
